Roeland Monasch, CEO, Aflatoun International

Roeland Monasch is the CEO of Aflatoun International. The NGO offers social and financial education in over 100 countries through an innovative social franchise model. The programme reaches four million children and young people each year, empowering them to make a positive change for a more equitable world. Until June 2015 Roeland was the UNICEF Representative in Sierra Leone. He was responsible for the UNICEF response during the unprecedented Ebola outbreak in the country. He also worked as UNICEF Representative in Georgia (2009-2012) and as Deputy Representative in Zimbabwe (2004-2009). 

Previously, Roeland was responsible within UNICEF/HQ for the global monitoring of different MDG indicators (1998-2004). From 1993-1998 he worked for the World Health Organization. Before joining the UN-system he worked with the NWFP Government, Pakistan (1991); International Fund for Agricultural Development, Zambia (1990); and Ministry of Agriculture, Bhutan (1989-90). Roeland is a national of the Netherlands, holds a Masters’ degree in Sociology (University of Groningen) and has an additional degree at Development Economics. He has published extensively in the international scientific literature, especially on issues related to Orphans and other Vulnerable Children. 

Roeland is married and has a ten year old daughter.
