Rajiv Kumar Garg, Principal Advisor, Coal India Limited

Dr. Rajiv Kumar Garg is Principal Advisor with Coal India Limited (CIL), the largest coal producing company in the world. He is responsible for reviewing existing policy & regulatory framework affecting coal mining, environment, forests, wildlife, indigenous and marginalized communities, and helps CIL in policy advocacy. Rajiv advices CIL in carrying out sustainable coal mining with due emphasis on seeking license to operate from host communities, and building social and natural capital in consultation with indigenous and marginalized communities adversely affected due to coal mining. Rajiv successfully closed various projects viz. Eco-restoration of Mined out Coalfields; Environmental Audit of Coal Mines; Mitigation Measures to Tiger Habitats from Coal Mining in Satpuda Maikal Landscape of Central India; Building Sustainable Livelihood Options for Marginalized Communities on Reclaimed Coal Mines, etc.
Rajiv has professional experience of over 3 decades spanning over Government and private & public sector commercial organizations. After joining Indian Forest Service, he had held various positions in the Government of Uttar Pradesh, both at the District and State Administration level. Earlier Rajiv as Senior Vice President with IL&FS Infrastructure Development Corporation (IIDC) took initiatives to develop green infrastructure in forest resource rich State of Uttarakhand. 
Rajiv is a visiting faculty to Indian Institute of Coal Management, TERI, etc. He is regularly invited by The World Bank, SAARC and FAO in various international conferences to deliver on challenges of development, inclusive growth and sustainability. 
Rajiv is an alumnus of IIT, Kanpur (India), Forest Research Institute, Dehradun (India), Institute for Development Policy and Management (UK), London Business School (UK), and Maxwell School of Public Policy and Citizenship (USA). He received “ICFRE Award for Excellence” in the year 2001-02 for outstanding contribution in the field of Forest Economics & Management and to his credit he has several papers published in international referred journals.
