Using virtual reality in education: A casestudy

  • Many of our students live in rural and remote areas where the cost of excursions can be prohibitive. Virtual reality experiences offer students a chance to see spaces in far more detail than a photograph or video.
  • When the virtual reality experience is detailed and students have choice you provide them with a more meaningful learning experience.
  • The NSW Department of Education and The Botanic Gardens Trust are currently working together to create a virtual reality bushwalk of the endangered Cumberland Plains woodland present at their Mount Annan site.

He will share this knowledge and how it can be used to further enhance the spatial design and how it can be adapted to suit different users at different times for different activities.This environment must be robust, healthy for users and to ensure it is sustainable; engaging.The talk will consider what multi-modal learning environments might look like, what furniture is best for each space, as well as what to be wary of. The talk will consider design concepts of affordance, constructive constraints, and the signifiers that can improve user engagement. He will also share his research on material choices. Finally, Andrew will share his latest work on using the constructed design to trigger augmented reality.

Beyond a Kit – Build your own Robot from the Ground Up

  • Microcontrollers are compact integrated circuits with a memory, processor and input-output interfaces, they are found in a myriad of household and industry electronic appliances, and many kit robotics systems such as Lego Mindstorms and Arduino.
  • St Michael’s students solder a PICAXE microcontroller and electronic components into a project board which they then use to explore a range of control systems (a ‘cyber-pet’, an ‘air-guitar’, and a ‘remote-control car’) before progressing to an autonomous robot. The advantage of using PICAXE is that it is inexpensive, readily available and its programming code (BASIC) is relatively simple to learn and debug compared with the more traditional C-based programming languages.
  • The work progresses through a series of open-ended challenges encompassing design, science, engineering and programming skills, which requires a truly engaged, collaborative and creative approach to learning.

  • Creating methodologies for “classroom VR”: With the Classroom VPC suite of resources and in-school piloting we’re establishing viable methodologies for practical and effective classroom use of low-barrier-to-entry through to high-end VR.
  • Establishing the value of VR for education: our studies are demonstrating measurable improvements in educational outcomes, enhanced interest and engagement by students and value recognition by teachers.
