Steven was contracted as the Interim Chief Operating Officer (COO) for AirAsia Japan in 2012 and latterly in his AirAsia Group tenure, he was the Group Head of Ground and Inflight Operations, responsible until his departure in 2015 for the overall operations, service and safety standards of both AirAsia (A320) and AirAsia X (A330) operations across its global network of +100 airports and 23 countries.
Steven drove operational and commercial delivery strategies that supported the Group’s expansion in passenger growth and aircraft activity, as well as a significant reduction in departmental unit costs in both its narrow and wide-body operations. Steven was also accountable for the successful operational readiness and airport transfer (ORAT) of all AirAsia’s operations consisting of 75,000 daily passengers and 65 based aircraft from its previous home at Low Cost Carrier Terminal in Kuala Lumpur, to the Group’s new home at KLIA2.
A programme to enhance the airport customer experience with the introduction of an innovative technology “blueprint” was also delivered by Steven, which significantly improved AirAsia’s customer proposition, self-service uptake and resourcing requirements; his technology focus also extended to creating an innovative partnership with INTERPOL that also saw AirAsia become the pioneer airline group to leverage the global law enforcement agency’s passenger document screening capability.
Steven also successfully managed the relationships with airports and regulators that saw the launch of AirAsia Japan and AirAsia India, as well as the expansion and cost transformation of the wide-body AirAsia X (A330) business.
Prior to AirAsia, Steven was responsible for the operational performance of the Jetstar Group as the Group Head of Operations (2009-2012). In addition to Steven’s operational responsibilities in Jetstar, he was also charged concurrently with responsibility as Head of Commercial for Jetstar Asia, the Singaporean based carrier of Qantas’ low-cost brand and managed its network expansion in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and other North Asian market; Steven also led the introduction in Jetstar Asia of its new “bundled” product and its commercial relationship with Changi Airport.
Prior to joining Jetstar in 2009, Steven spent the previous ten years in various positions, including in senior management roles as General Manager Operations for easyJet and Director Ground Operations for vivaAerobus.
