One of the primary problems associated with rail transport is vibrations that are transferred from the track superstructure into the surrounding area. Humans perceive these vibrations in the form of a trembling in the ground or structure-borne noise. The other main problem relates to the cost of maintenance work that needs to be carried out on the railways as a result of wear and tear caused by insufficient elasticity within the track.
