Mr Patrick Bergstedt, President, Asia Pacific, MSD

Patrick Bergstedt was appointed President, Asia Pacific for MSD in September 2011, based in Singapore. He has a proven commercial track record in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and biologics. His working career spans a number of geographies including South Africa, France, Belgium, and the US. Eighteen years of his career were spent at Hoechst Marion Roussel (now Sanofi) where he served in various operational and strategic roles of increasing responsibility. During his tenure at HMR, he played an important role in developing the global anti-infective business, leading numerous product launches and gained extensive experience in building and leading a number of partnerships with both small and large companies. He joined Merck in 2001 and was initially responsible for the antibiotic portfolio. Over time, this responsibility increased and he became responsible for managing the entire Infectious Diseases Franchise (anti-bacterials, anti-fungals, HIV, and HCV) from phase III to patent expiration. He was also responsible for working closely with basic research to provide commercial leadership for early stage programs. Prior to joining Merck, he headed sales and marketing for a biotech company in the field of tissue engineering. Patrick is a graduate of Rand Afrikaans University in South Africa, where he received his B. Com.
