With nearly 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, Michel Vounatsos brings to MSD China the vast knowledge and expertise we need to drive us to new levels of success. Mr. Vounatsos has had extensive business experience across the world, in both mature and emerging markets, including Europe (France, Belgium, Poland), the U.S., the Middle-East and Africa. Prior to his assignment to China, he was the president of MSD France, one of the largest MSD subsidiaries outside the United States. During his time as MSD Managing Director of Poland, he was able to significantly increase MSD's presence while supporting the health care reforms that this emerging market needed. In January 2009, Mr. Vounatsos was appointed President of MSD in China, and in September 2011, he also took on the position of Chairman of MSD in China. Since Mr. Vounatsos’s arrival, MSD has been focused on its mission of being “In China, For China”: supporting China’s healthcare reforms, placing corporate social responsibilities as a priority and bringing innovative medicines and services to this country, even to remote community healthcare centers. Under the guidance of Mr. Vounatsos, all MSD’s functions in China have been pulling together, unleashing the energy of this global corporation into the local context. Today, MSD China reports directly to the global headquarters in the USA. This demonstrates the strategic importance of China to Merck/MSD. Prior to his Merck experience, Mr. Vounatsos worked with Ciba as Head of the Pharma Division (Scientific Office) in Saudi Arabia and in marketing functions in Basle Switzerland. Mr. Vounatsos was educated in France, at the medical university in Bordeaux (CSCT) and at HEC business school in Paris (MBA). Mr. Vounatsos and his family live in Shanghai, China. |
