Cynthia Derdeyn, Professor, Vice Chair of Research, University of Washington

Dr. Derdeyn is a distinguished research scientist who focuses on solving some of the most challenging aspects of HIV/AIDS including developing novel vaccines and antivirals. She leads a laboratory-based research program investigating HIV virology, immunology, and vaccinology. Her team has made significant advances to the development of vaccines to prevent HIV using pre-clinical nonhuman primate models, including defining antibody targets and correlates of protection. Moreover, she has made major contributions to understanding aspects of HIV transmission, evolution, and immune escape that are relevant to AIDS pathogenesis and prevention. Dr. Derdeyn’s laboratory employs cutting edge tools and engages in multidisciplinary collaborations to advance our understanding of HIV/AIDS and develop novel agents for prevention and therapy. She has an exemplary record of service with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) including service as Vice Chair and Chair of the HIV Immunology and Vaccine Development (HIVD) study section, an ad hoc member of the AIDS Research Advisory Council and an external site reviewer of the NCI AIDS & Cancer Virus Program . Additionally, she has a strong track record of institutional accomplishment in faculty professional development, mentoring, and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in science and academic medicine.
