Cristina Cassetti, Division Deputy Director, NIH/NIAID

Dr. Cristina Cassetti is the Deputy Director of the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) at the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a component of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).  DMID is the largest extramural Division at NIAID division and supports basic, translational, and clinical biomedical research on all human infectious diseases other than HIV/AIDS. DMID is the lead Division at NIAID for preparing and responding to emerging infectious disease outbreaks, including coronaviruses, influenza viruses, zika, and Ebola; supporting research to combat antimicrobial resistance; and developing medical countermeasures against old foes such as tuberculosis and malaria. As Deputy Director, Dr. Cassetti shares responsibility with the Director for providing scientific and operational leadership in planning, conducting, and evaluating DMID’s extramural research program of national and international scope. Dr. Cassetti has a Ph.D. in virology from the University of Rome, Italy. Prior to her work in extramural NIAID she conducted research in virology and vaccine R&D in intramural NIH, academia, and the pharmaceutical sector.
