Mr Roland Martland | Head of Asset Integrity and Risk Management DONG E&P
Roland graduated from Imperial College in 1978 and has over 30 years' experience in design, construction, safety and operations' management in the oil, gas and chemicals business. Early in his career, Roland specialised in design and construction projects for BP, Shell, Marathon, ICI and worked for major consultants and contractors to the E&P business. In the mid-late 80's, Roland joined the UK Department of Energy as an Operational Safety Specialist, visiting the majority of the manned UKCS offshore installations and conducting safety and integrity inspections, audits and incident investigations and was part of the Piper A investigation team. Subsequently, Roland joined Shell International working on major capital projects in the Far East making sure that safety and operational requirements were complied with during all phases of the projects. In the mid-90's Roland joined the UK Health and Safety Executive, responsible for major accident hazard research into fires and explosions, drilling and topsides plant integrity and developed and lead many of the integrity programmes that generated industry standards for safety and integrity worldwide.
More recently, Roland held the position of Head of Health and Safety in Maersk Oil's corporate HQ in Copenhagen, implementing their process safety initiatives and supporting the Operating Units in UK, Denmark, Kazakhstan and Qatar - particularly with regards to legal compliance and operational safety. Subsequently, Roland joined the Government owned Danish E&P business, DONG Energy, as Head of Technical Safety, and since 2011 is now their Head of Risk Management and Asset Integrity. In this role, Roland is developing risk management practices within the company covering most aspects of E&P risk and is developing Executive level workshops on risk management - in particular the common understanding by the E&P Board of Enterprise Risk Management as applied to operational, financial and reputational risk management.
