Christian von der Ropp, Director, Terrestrial Networks, A Human Right

Christian is an independent telecommunications consultant from Germany.

He has acted as an advisor in the field of ICT policy to administrations and politicians throughout Europe.

While working for a Bulgarian group from 2014 until 2017 he contributed to the country‘s growing role as gateway towards the Middle East by establishing a new Internet Exchange in Sofia and commercializing a new geopolitically safe route connecting the Middle East to Europe via the Caucasus Cable System, a submarine cable crossing the Black Sea.

As Ecosystem Director Europe at Megaport he lately introduced Megaport‘s software-defined network services in Europe and promoted the company‘s Internet Exchanges across Europe.

In his voluntary role at A Human Right he has been working on various projects to bring Internet connectivity into underserved and unserved regions, including to the small remote South Atlantic island of St Helena which will get connected to the South Atlantic Express cable in 2020. The project has become feasible through the backhaul requirements of planned satellite ground stations which Christian attracted.

His focus lies on infrastructure development including submarine cables, non-geostationary satellite constellations, IXPs and the Internet peering landscape as well as innovative next-generation technologies such as SDN and NFV.
