Ahmed completed his Pharmacy degree from Portsmouth and went on to do his PhD at Bath University in Pharmaceutical Chemistry.  He started his industrial carrier at Boots Pharmaceutical in 1988 where he worked on the development of a marketed anti obesity drug called Reductil.  After a short 2 year stint at Rhone Poulenc Rorer, he joined BioPharm R&D at GSK in 1997 as the head of Formulation and delivery research within BioPharm. He is now working as a Director of CMC at NovaLiq since Oct 2015.
