Meenu Wadhwa, Section Leader For Cyotkines And Growth Factors Section, NIBSC

As the section leader for the Cytokines and Growth Factors Section, she is responsible for a number of diverse projects in these fields. These include preparation of World Health Organisation WHO international cytokine and growth factor standards and/or reference reagents, development and implementation of cytokine and growth factor assays and their use in standardization, product testing and in research. As NIBSC is an Official Medicines Control laboratory, the laboratory also participates in the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare (EDQM) coordinated centralised authorized procedure testing programme for cytokines and growth factors and related molecules.

Meenu’s main research interests include development of novel bioassays for cytokines and related molecules, developing tests for evaluation of safety of biotherapeutic products e.g., cytokine contamination of biological products, adverse effects of immunomodulatory proteins and assessing unwanted immunogenicity of biotherapeutics including monoclonal antibodies and gene therapy products. This work has resulted in contribution to various guidelines both at the World Health Organisation and at the European Medicines Agency (EMEA).

This work involves collaboration with various research groups, clinicians and biotechnology companies and has resulted in a number of important publications in scientific journals and presentations at international scientific conferences.
