Mr Andrew Rice | Assistant Secretary, Identity Security Branch Attorney-General's Department
Andrew Rice is Assistant Secretary, Identity Security Branch in the National Security Resilience Policy Division in the Attorney-General’s Department (AGD). He is responsible for development of national policy relating to Identity Security and for implementation of the Document Verification Service.
Andrew joined AGD in February 2011. Prior to that he worked for six years in the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service., where he had responsibility for intelligence support on law enforcement and national security issues; anti-dumping operations; and tariff classification and valuation issues.
Andrew’s work background includes twelve years in the Australian Department of Defence, working in the fields of intelligence analysis and policy, international Defence relations policy, Defence Force capability analysis, and logistics and national industry policy. He also worked for four years with the ACT Chief Minister’s Department with responsibility for social policy, counter-terrorism and critical infrastructure coordination, regional policy and coordination, and economic and urban planning policy.
Andrew also served as a truce monitor in the Truce Monitoring Group in Bougainville in 1998; worked in Defence’s Strategic Headquarters on peace-keeping force coalition planning during the East Timor crisis in 1999; played a part in the crisis management and post-crisis community recovery activities following the bushfires in Canberra in 2003; and had a key intelligence role in the Australian Government’s counter-people smuggling efforts in 2009 and 2010..
Andrew has Bachelor and Post-graduate degrees in history and international relations. He is a Graduate of the Australian Joint Services Staff College. He completed a Vincent Fairfax Fellowship in 2001. He is married and has two young daughters.
Andrew’s interests include exercising, military history research and current affairs.
