As CEO of Openreach, Clive is responsible for the local access network - the fibres, wires and cables that connect tens of millions of homes and businesses to phone, broadband, data and TV services. This network infrastructure is used by over 500 communications providers, and ultimately serves over 30m customers. Clive is also responsible for the nationwide roll-out of fibre broadband and will manage the deployment of ultrafast broadband, with an ambition to reach 12m premises by the end of 2020.
Clive is one of Britain’s leading telecoms and digital infrastructure experts, with 30 years’ experience in the sector, including senior roles across BT in engineering, technology innovation and implementation, and network operations. He has a deep understanding of the complexity and challenges of managing telecoms infrastructure, and of the service customers expect.
Previously Clive served as Chief Information Officer for BT Group and as Chief Executive of Technology, Service & Operations, the Group’s multi-billion pound core technology, networks innovation and IT division.
Clive was responsible for overseeing the development of G.fast, the ultrafast technology that, thanks to BT’s investment, Openreach will roll-out to some 10m premises in the next five years and to the majority of the UK by 2025.
Clive was educated at Eltham College and the University of Bristol, and has a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. He also holds a Master’s degree in Management from Lancaster University. Clive is married with two children, and lives in London. He is a long-time supporter of West Ham United.
