SGN operates over 74,000 km of gas mains in Scotland and the south and south east of England. Whoever their supplier is, we have a responsibility to deliver gas safely, reliably and efficiently to every one of our 5.8 million customers’ homes and businesses. It’s their gas but it’s our network.
Aiding the UK to achieve its legally-binding climate change targets by the delivery of biomethane into the gas distribution network is central to our long-term strategy of ‘greening the gas’. We believe gas networks will perform a vital role in a low-carbon and sustainable energy future and have been leading the way in biomethane development in the UK.
We act as both the regulated network gas transporter and through our commercial services division can be a commercial business partner. We are one of the country’s leading authorities in 'green gas' and biogas development, having injected the first green gas into a UK gas network at Didcot in Oxfordshire and as a leading partner in the UK’s first commercially operating biomethane plant at Rainbarrow Farm, near Poundbury, Dorset.
Providing investment and engineering services we currently have a number of projects underway to increase the volume of green gas injected across our network. Recently we completed the ‘groundbreaking’ National compressed Gas Injection Facility at Portsdown Hill, where we can now connect remote biogas production sites to our gas network without the need for a physical piped connection.
At SGN we believe by offering our customers the opportunity to access industry experts, to share investment and partnership structures, we can provide a holistic service, whereby our learning and developments are shared with our partners, providing significant long-term benefits to all.
