Born and bred in the township of Soweto, Johannesburg, Thami Mtshali is a pioneering businessman who started off his career as a Chemical Engineer in the Petro Chemical Industry, working both locally and abroad. He then decided to actively pursue an entrepreneurial career in the Telecommunications industry co-founding WBS in 1998. WBS, which started as a greenfields, was originally established to provide the former national lottery company Uthingo with a narrowband-based network backbone for the national lottery, this was done in partnership with GTEC, a US based company, and the largest lottery company in the world, supplying equipment or managing facilities for 80 of the 128 on-line lotteries around the world. The Uthingo experience formed the basis on which WBS entered into the Wireless Broadband Solution space.
