Mr. Suyama is Chairman of Aries Capital Partners Ltd, a private equity fund that invests in coal concessions in Indonesia. He is also the ex-Managing Director, Head of SE Asia and Head of Indonesian Investment Banking, Merrill Lynch & Co. He is also the former President/Director of PT Merrill Lynch Indonesia and worked at Merrill Lynch from 1987-1999 and 2004-2009. He has been active in Indonesia since the mid-1990s, when he established Merrill Lynch’s investment banking operations in the country. Mr. Suyama from 2004-2009 completed over $9 billion worth of transactions, including the $288 million leverage buy-out of Berau Coal and the subsequent sale for $1.5 billion, and the $200 million CELLs transaction for Medco Energy, which became the first Harvard Business School case study of financing for an Indonesian company. He has also made major Indonesian transactions include the US$ 1.1 billion IPO of PT Indosat and the US$ 1.8 billion IPO of PT Telkomunikasi Indonesia, the two largest such IPOs in Asia, ex-Japan, at the time. He has been involved in roughly US$ 3 billion of transaction value for Indonesian coal companies, including the US$ 600 MM asset securitization for PT Bumi Resources, the 2007 US$ 280 MM buy-out of PT Berau Coal (“Berau Coal”), the US$ 310 MM high yield bond for Berau Coal and the sale of Berau Coal in 2010 for US$ 1.5 billion. He graduated from Yale University with honors in International Economics and a minor in Greek Philosophy.
