Mrs Sharon Holi, Head: Enterprise Risk, Safaricom

I began my career as an accountant qualifying for the Kenyan Certified Public Accountant qualifications and hold a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Accounting option) Hons. from the University of Nairobi. I got my graduate training working as an external auditor with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Nairobi, Kenya for 4 years and then chose to move on and work in accounting as the Chief Accountant for Africa Online, the leading ISP in Kenya at the time. My experience in industry awoke in me a need to grow my knowledge in how businesses should be managed outside of the Finance function and so I rejoined PricewaterhouseCoopers and worked in their advisory business as a Risk Management consultant for 5 years. During that time I worked on a variety of projects – from reviewing Information Systems controls, ERP implementations, Internal Audit projects, SARBOX documentation, Sustainability audits and running risk management training programmes based on the COSO framework. From this experience I wanted to have a chance to implement hands on all that I had learnt and advised others to do and so I moved back into industry and joined Safaricom Limited, the leading mobile telecommunications player in Kenya. I have been working for them for the last 4 years as an Enterprise Risk Manager, a role I deeply enjoy. My docket includes facilitating and coordinating risk assessments in accordance with the COSO framework, Business Continuity Management, the Corporate Information Security Office and, until earlier this year, the Insurance function. I look forward to sharing my experience and talking through the challenges we face as professionals in positioning and strengthening Enterprise Risk Management in the face of a changing landscape and as a strong reference point for internal audit.
