Mark Rothera is responsible for the commercial operations of Shire Human Genetic Therapies in Europe, the Middle East & Africa. Mark joined Shire in early 2006 just after the acquisition of TKT and since then has been instrumental in driving a step change in growth in the region. This has been achieved through geographic expansion and through the successive launch of three new therapies for rare diseases. Mark has spent the last 20 years in the BioPharmaceutical sector. This has included 7 years with Glaxo Wellcome, where he held global strategic and operational marketing & sales roles with French and UK operations. He has also held European commercial and general management roles with the start-up and medium sized biopharmaceutical companies; Amylin Pharmaceuticals, PathoGenesis and Chiron BioPharmaceuticals. On three occasions Mark has had the opportunity to build regional operations from the very earliest stages and launch new therapies across the EMEA region. For the past 13 years Mark has worked predominantly in the field of Orphan Drugs, pre-launching and launching novel therapies for Cystic Fibrosis, Hunter Syndrome, Hereditary Angioedema and Gaucher’s disease. A patient-centred approach has motivated Mark and his teams to enable patients to have access to therapy as early as possible through existing and innovative early access mechanisms. Mark has been a board member of the UK Bio Industry Association, has an MA in Natural Science from Cambridge University, an MBA from INSEAD and a Diploma in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors.
