National Institute for Biologicals Standards and Control
Dr Othmar G Engelhardt is a Principal Scientist in the Division of Virology of the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, a centre of the Health Protection Agency, UK. He received a doctorate degree from the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria. Working at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, USA, the University of Freiburg, Germany, and the University of Oxford, UK, he has been involved in research into various aspects of influenza virus and other negative strand RNA viruses. At NIBSC, he is involved in various aspects of NIBSC’s influenza work. His research involves the use of reverse genetics technology in deriving candidate influenza vaccine viruses. He was part of the team at NIBSC that produced candidate vaccine viruses in response to the emergence of the new pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus. He is responsible for the generation of candidate vaccine viruses for seasonal influenza by conventional reassortment techniques. His team produces reference reagents that are needed for the potency determination of inactivated influenza vaccines, and performs official batch release of influenza vaccines. He is involved in various WHO projects; this includes seasonal and pandemic influenza strain selection where NIBSC plays an important role as one of the four Essential Regulatory Laboratories (ERLs). He has served as temporary adviser to WHO on various influenza-related topics, and as technical expert at the EMA and the UK Department of Health.
