As Time Magazine has succinctly observed, lawyer-turned-hotelier Loh Lik Peng “[certainly] didn‟t make his name by pandering to conventional notions of innkeeping”. The terms „whimsical‟, „eclectic‟ and „eccentric‟ have been used to describe Loh‟s properties – both Hotel 1929 and the New Majestic Hotel. Strip away the verbose rhetoric, however, and one is left with an impression that is perhaps best described in the following words: Bold. Daring. Different. Unique. Should it come as any surprise that Loh‟s choice of General Manager mirrors his desired panache?

Despite graduating from the London School of Economics (with an honours degree in Management and Law) in 2002, Charmaine – in a manner not unlike that of her boss, Loh – opted for a markedly different career path than what she had studied for. Choosing instead to carve out her niche in service-oriented fields, Charmaine was co-opted by Loh into the role of sales and marketing manager for his then-fledgling Hotel 1929 sales / marketing team. She proceeded to craft and construct – from scratch – a comprehensive sales and marketing strategy for Hotel 1929 (extending later to the New Majestic Hotel). The magnitude of the task was immense, and included the creation of client profiles and sales projections; the collation and analysis of budgeting, PR and marketing data; the formulation and implementation of various operating procedures by which the team would function; and so forth. All this, while simultaneously coordinating the multiple activities that were taking place in both hotels.

In the first quarter of 2010, she was also specially chosen to assist with the pre-opening of Loh‟s Shanghai project, The Waterhouse at South Bund. The challenge of building a team and getting the hotel operationally ready within a very tight timeline was immense, but it was great exposure. This experience helped Charmaine to also open Wanderlust, Loh‟s newest boutique hotel in Singapore in August the same year.
In an industry where leadership positions are synonymous with decades of experience, Charmaine‟s flair for creative and innovative solutions, dogged insistence on the highest standards of customer care and terrifying capacity for handling mind-numbing levels of hardwork have seen her rise to the position of General Manager.
