Mr Neil Smith,
Director Transit Systems Australia Mr. Neil Smith has 37 years of experience working in the urban transport industry as a manager, consultant, company owner and academic. He commenced with the Busways group in western Sydney in 1972, and purchased a majority share in Manly Bus Service in 1975. In 1976 he established the consultancy Urban Transport Systems, working with private bus companies in NSW and Queensland and the Macarthur Development Board (NSW) in the development and implementation of urban bus networks. Between 1981 and 1994 he was the Managing Director of Peninsula Buslines in Gosford (NSW) and between 1985 and 1991 a Director of Bayside Buslines (QLD). During this period he served on the Executive Committee of the Bus and Coach Association (NSW). He was closely involved in the establishment of links between BCA (NSW) and the Institute of Transport Studies at the University of Sydney, with a focus on the development and management of the Certificate in Transport Management course. In 1995 he worked full-time as a Senior Lecturer at the Institute and obtained a Masters in Transport Management from the University of Sydney in 1994. Mr. Smith has been a Director of Swan Transit (Perth) and Torrens Transit (Adelaide) from their establishment in 1995 and 2000. These companies are now the largest urban bus operators in both Western and South Australia. In 2005 these companies entered the ferry business with the purchase of the Bay Islands Taxi Service (Redland Bay, QLD) and expanded in 2006 with the purchase of the car ferry operator Sea Stradbroke (Cleveland, QLD). Throughout his career Mr. Smith has focused on designing and implementing efficient and customer focused public transport networks in NSW, WA, SA and QLD. He has spoken extensively at industry forums in Australia and overseas on transport operations, industrial relations, public transport marketing and urban transport contracting.
