 Mr. Joe Weiss,
Transportation & Projects Director City of London Corporation A chartered civil engineer with a MasterÕs degree and also Fellow of both the professional Institution of Civil Engineering plus that of the Institution of Highways and Transportation, Joe Weiss has spend the past 35 years in the business with time equally split between jobs in central government, the private sector and local administrations.
He has worked in the airline industry, on national highway design standards, on turn-key rail and new town construction projects but the majority of his career has been devoted to solving the problems of congested urban situations. With the growth of transport demand closely linked to changing economic conditions and ever increasing expectations of quality about the physical environment, it is a challenge that becomes even more complicated with the need to embrace sustainable solutions.
The creation of new regional authorities in London and elsewhere has complicated even further the processes required to take forward projects which affect the public realm. LondonÕs upward employment trends favour clustering in busy metropolitan centres. This has resulted in greater pressures on public space and rail transport supplier organisations due to increased commuting, all of which contribute to climate change Ð but it still may be more desirable than dispersed jobs which are mainly car dependant. Joe believes he has occasionally been able to chart a politically acceptable course through this maze.
He is employed by the City of London where he is now exercising his fifth and most complex role Ð currently as the Transportation and Projects Director.Appearing: Day One - Tuesday 23 February 2010 9am The role of transport in creating efficient, liveable and sustainable cities
