 Mr Fergus Gammie,
Chief Executive Auckland Regional Transport Authority Fergus Gammie has held the position of Chief Executive for ARTA since December 2006. He previously held the position of General Manager, Strategy and Planning for ARTA.
ARTA is the Auckland regionÕs central transport body. The authority is responsible for the integrated planning, funding and implementation of transport throughout the region.
Fergus has been instrumental in leading the development of key passenger transport programmes in the Auckland region, which was, a few short years ago, significantly lacking in public transport services and infrastructure.
While there is still some way to go towards ARTAÕs goal of achieving world class levels of service and infrastructure for the region, gains have been made and momentum in the development of the transport sector is occurring after decades of neglect.
Public transport patronage has grown significantly under FergusÕs stewardship. Success stories include a rise in rail patronage from 2.5 million passenger journeys in 2002 to just under 8 million in 2009. Bus services on the North Shore using the new Northern Busway have also increased over 130% in patronage levels between 2006 and 2009, taking 2,000 cars off the harbour bridge at peak times. Twenty one rail stations on AucklandÕs rail network have been redeveloped during that period including the significant redevelopment of Newmarket train station, due to be opened at the start of 2010 with 24 more stations due for development.
Fergus has a significant background in transport planning including senior level experience in public transport planning, roading and land use and transport. He has worked for the Auckland Regional Council; Booz Allen and Hamilton and the Canterbury Regional CouncilAppearing: Day One - Tuesday 23 February 2010 9.50am The role of transport in supporting regional growth
