Mr Colin Henson, speaking at Urban Transport World Australia 2010

Mr Colin Henson,
Chair Transport Chapter and Principal, ARUP
Planning Institute of Australia

Colin is a Principal responsible as project director for a broad range of private sector and government clients, and a leader in the global Arup Planning and Transport businesses. Colin graduated with extra units in transportation and town planning, and undertook Management Programmes at the Melbourne Business School and London Business School. He gained experience with the Strategic Planning section of the City of Melbourne. For three years from 1981 he travelled extensively overseas, working and living in various countries including France, Japan and the United Kingdom where he worked for Shell Exploration and R Travers Morgan & Partners. In 1983 Colin joined Arup and was the Senior Transportation Engineer in Perth. He was NSW Manager of Arup Specialist Groups (Acoustics, Fire, Geotechnics, R&D, and Planning). He has undertaken projects in New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Greece Indonesia, Philippines, Kuwait, Dubai, China, South Africa, India and Hong Kong. He is a Governor of the Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering at the University of Sydney, where he is regularly involved considering the effect of emerging trends and technologies on societies. His current research interest is in developing access as a prime objective in planning exchange opportunities rather than just the Òtyranny of movementÓ. He is the Knowledge Activist for the Australasian Division, directing part of the global knowledge network of over 9000 staff and speaking at conferences internationally. He participates in numerous planning forums and workshops including plans for the Athens Olympics site, London Olympics bid, Singapore River Masterplan, and Chiang Mai New City. He was Director of public transport planning studies for the M2006 Commonwealth Games for the Department of Infrastructure in Victoria, and contributed to the successful bid for the London Olympics 2012. He remains motivated by the Key Speech by Sir Ove Arup, especially the environmental and social purposes of design.

Post-Conference Workshop - Friday 26 February 2010
9am

Integrating Transport into the Community

There is a tendency to think of transport improvements as billion-dollar concrete and steel infrastructure projects. But much of the value to be derived from transport is in creating opportunities for exchange of people and goods.  The famous study of Australia’s isolation is termed the Tyranny of Distance but in modern Australian cities, the most urbanised country in the world, there is also the Tyranny of Movement where more car travel actually inhibits social interaction and the economy.
The workshop will examine opportunities to put bus and rail stops located in the right land use, encourage local work and play with less travel, urban design - visualising the benefits of easy walking and cycling.  The workshop will examine examples of pedestrians in transport interchanges - principles and modelling, and the emerging field of Urban Informatics - feedback loops in information and way finding. We will identify some of the cost savings of good design practice.
Who should attend: planners, engineers, transport managers, transport policy makers, local government staff, and urban designers.
