Andy Jebson has been working in the UK public transport and Government business sectors since 1994. In that time he has been a commercial director of a rail franchise company, during which time he led the development of gating for the entire business and the development and delivery of a new station before establishing web, tele and direct sales businesses for the franchise’s owning group. Following secondment to the UK rail industry trade body ATOC, where he was responsible for developing and delivering a smartcard strategy for the UK rail industry he was also a contributor and then a founding director of ITSO, the public/private partnership company which has developed the UK inter-operable public transport smartcard scheme specification. Andy has served as a member of the UK Government’s Cabinet Office Committee establishing a smartcard policy for the UK, an expert witness for the UK Government’s House of Commons Select Committee on ID cards and a member of a number of bodies such as UITP, where he is currently on a smartcard process oversight committee, the UK CEN 224 Mirror Group and has spoken at events in the UK, America and the Far East. The experience builds on periods as International Marketing Director for Budget Rent a Car and Customer Services Director for Grand Metropolitan Retailing. In both cases he was responsible for the development of new technology solutions to improve customer service and business efficiency.

Smartcard technology and public transport today

Andy Jebson looks at smartcard technology today and illustrates how it has already been deployed in the modern public transport and services environment with examples from Boston in America and Yorcard in the UK.

Andy goes on to comment on the issues and opportunities that can be identified in the use of new technologies, using the experience of the implementation of the two schemes, one proprietary and one an open Government specification deployed in a complex multi operator commercial environment
