 Mr Alain Mercier,
General Manager, Transit Services, Infrastructure Services and Community Sustainability OC Transpo City of Ottawa Alain Mercier has held the position of General Manager of Canada’s capital city transit service known as OC Transpo since 2007. Alain has over 25 years international experience in the transportation industry in both capacities as operator and manufacturer/service provider to North American urban transit systems.
OC Transpo operates as a business unit within the City of Ottawa municipality and acts as transport authority and operator under the guidance of a sub-committee of the City Council. As operator it provides service to a region of 1.2 million inhabitants over a region spanning almost 3,000 square kilometers achieving a per capita ridership of 125 trips annually. Since 2007, changes in governance and the administrative model has resulted in merging all operational functions for rail, bus and specialized transit for clients with mobility disabilities. Expansion of its internationally-renowned busway known as the Transitway and a new direction of partial conversion to rail to transform the City’s urban form is now underway. With per capita ridership increasing and transit congestion arising since achieving 100 million annual rides, new programs are underway on asset efficiency, service quality and technology to maintain growth in client satisfaction since 2006. Under its first 10-year operational and investment plan released in 2009, infrastructure and service design improvements will respond to an expected 30% increase in ridership while generating significant reductions in local source emissions, reduced commuting times and an affordable tax base.
As a graduate of Concordia University in Economics, Alain has held senior positions with Spire Group, Rheinmetall AG, ALSTOM Transport, VIA Rail Canada and the Voyageur Group. He has been involved in various transportation associations; regional development boards and currently sits on the Board of the Motor Carrier Passenger Council of Canada.
