SNCF, operator of a 20,000 miles (including 1,200 miles run from 190m/h to 200 m/h) network serving both passenger and freight transport. SNCF runs 13,917 trains daily and carries 160 million passengers and 106 million metric tonnes of freight per annum. Although the French Railway are most well known and appreciated as the operator of the TGV ("train à grande vitesse") high-speed, fixed-consist trainsets, (one of which holds the world record for speed on rails), it also offers its customers a whole range of services, from local, urban and suburban/commuter services to international long-distance carriage. In addition, it handles the maintenance of both the infrastructure and railway fixed plant (which belongs to Réseau Ferré de France) and that of almost 7,000-strong fleet of motive stock, of 424 TGV trainsets and 110,000 goods wagons. This high competence in industrial maintenance is perhaps best illustrated by the 92% availability rate achieved for the TGVs.

Already the market leader in light rail vehicle manufacturing in North America, Siemens Transportation Systems (STS) recently completed a $26 million expansion of its Sacramento plant to serve the burgeoning public transit market. The larger plant will also allow STS to bring new products to the U.S. market – namely, high speed rail. With one megawatt of solar energy already in place, Siemens is entering the second phase of its solar project and is adding an additional megawatt, bringing the total solar power to 2 MW at the Sacramento facility.
