The World Cup & the Olympics
  • US$ 210 million have been invested in overhauling Rio's port zone
  • US$ 5.5 billion is expected to be spent to improve transportation in Rio in preparation for the Olympic games
  • A high speed bullet train is being developed and is expected to be completed in time for the World Cup
  • The government also has plans for 11,700 miles of railroads facilitating improved access to the 12 cities hosting the World Cup
  • ABDIB estimates that US$ 43 billion will be spent on commercial and tourism construction in preparation for the 2014 World Cup
Air travel:
  • US$ 650 million is expected to be spent on a new air hub
Ports:
  • The government announced a US$ 2 billion upgrade for the Port of Santos in 2009
Roads:
  • The RodoBahia consortium was awarded a US $868 million 25-year highway concession in Bahia state, including upgrading 550km of highways in 2009 
Power:
  • The Angra III nuclear power plant was given environmental approval in 2009
  • The Belo Monte 11.2GW, US$ 4.1 billion hydropower plant is also moving along
  • Work is also due to start on the Jirau hydropower plant, with the Brazilian Development Bank awarding GDF Suez and its partners a US$ 3.1 billion loan for the project
Construction:
  • The government approved US$ 152 billion for the construction of low income housing over the next 15 years
