Mr Don Heron, speaking at High Speed Rail World USA 2010

Mr Don Heron,
Director Passenger Rail
Canadian Pacific Railway

Don began his career at Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) in 1968 with a summer job on a survey crew in Canada’s Western Mountains. After graduating in Civil Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1973, Don hired on full time in marketing at CP in Montreal. CP later seconded Don to the American Association of Railroads Research Center at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. After returning to Montreal, Don introduced the first industry application of the Train Dynamics Analyzer train simulator at CP. Don learned about people and 24 hour railway operation while working in field assignments as Trainmaster, Assistant Superintendent, and Chief Dispatcher. Then, Don moved onward to the world of business development. One inspiring assignment, from concept to implementation, was serving as CP project leader of the successful West Coast Express commuter rail service in Vancouver. After CP relocation of Company headquarters to Calgary, Don worked on co-production projects with other railways. One notable success, working with CN, was development of the Fraser Canyon Directional Running initiative which began January 3, 2000 and continues to work effectively today. The exposure to commuter train service sparked Don’s interest in moving people by rail. This led to appointment to his current position as Director of Passenger Rail at Calgary headquarters. While CP is predominantly a freight railway, it hosts the operation of more than 33,000 passenger trains per year on its lines in Canada and the US. Don was so busy working for the railway that he forgot to have kids. Don enjoys life through contact with nieces and nephews, experiences with colleagues in the rail industry and world travel with his lovely wife Ida.
