 Prof David Bruce Matchar,
Program Director for Health Services & Systems Research Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore, Singapore David B. Matchar, MD, is Professor of Medicine at Duke University and Inaugural Director of the Program in Health Services and Systems Research at the Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School.
For over 25 years Professor Matchar has worked in academic clinical policy analysis and development, and clinical practice improvement. He focuses his research on the evaluation of clinical practice based on “best evidence,” and the implementation and evaluation of innovative strategies to promote practice change. He has worked in a wide range of clinical content areas, including cerebrovascular disease, women’s health issues, renal disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, migraine, and antithrombotic strategies.
His methodological work addresses the design of effectiveness studies, strategies for bridging the gap between analysts and policy makers, utilizing models to promote communication regarding complex clinical policy questions, and application of decision support systems to link evidence and community practice. He has been the principal investigator of the Stroke Prevention Patient Outcomes Research Team (PORT), a comprehensive seven-year project to evaluate the state of the science in stroke prevention and to implement strategies for practice improvement. He was also the principal investigator for a trial of anticoagulation services in managed care organizations, the Managing Anticoagulation Services Trial (MAST). Currently, he is principal investigator of a four-year implementation trial for practice improvement, the 28-city VA cooperative study #481, The Home International Normalized Ratio Study (THINRS). He is chairman of the executive committee of the national VA quality improvement initiative (QUERI).
In August 2009, Professor Matchar was awarded the prestigious STaR Investigator Award by the Singapore Ministry of Health's National Medical Research Council (NMRC) and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), to establish an integrated community effort to improve dementia care in Singapore.
Dr. Matchar has recently completed terms as Health Policy Section Editor of Stroke and the editorial board member of the British Medical Journal’s Clinical Evidence. He is currently on the editorial board of The American Journal of Medicine, and Health Services and Outcomes Research Methodology. He was President of the Society for General Internal Medicine Southern Section, and has been a trustee and vice president of the Society for Medical Decision Making. He has served as advisor to several national organizations, including the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and has sat on the AHRQ Health Research Dissemination and Implementation Study Section as well as study sections for CDC and NIH. He has served on panels for the Institute of Medicine (IOM) related to methodology of systematic reviews, including two recently completed reports under the IOM Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice.
