Ms Erica Johnson, speaking at Clean Technology World Africa 2010

Ms Erica Johnson,
Chief Officer: Customer Network Business
Eskom

Erica Johnson joined Eskom in 1994 in the Distributor Division of Eskom. She worked in the Regional Control Centre as an operations engineer before moving in 1997 to the System Operations Department in the ESKOM Transmission Division, as the National Control Manager. She quickly demonstrated a high-level understanding of operational planning support, energy management systems and control room practices required in managing a constrained power system in a restructuring electricity supply industry. In 2002 she was promoted to head the system operations business unit. Since being appointed in this challenging position she has received a number of recognitions. In 2005 she was nominated as the runner up in the ESKOM executive of the year award. In 2006 she received the Executive of the Year Award for the leadership and managerial skills she displayed during the power outages experienced in the Western Cape. Erica was promoted to Senior General Manager (Transmission) on 1 October 2006 and subsequently to her current position of Managing Director (System Operations and Planning) on 1 July 2007. Erica has a B.Sc and M.Sc degree in Electrical Engineering from UCT. She is also the South African member of an international research body, the International Council on Large Electric Systems (Cigre). Erica is an avid dog lover and does pottery in her spare time.
