 Capt. Guido Saltos Martinez,
Executive President Icaro Air ICARO was born of the initiative of aviation loves, and founded on September 21, 1971 by Captain Guido Saltos Martínez, present-day Executive President of the company. Inspired by their passion for flying, they founded the Civil Aviation School for pilot training in the city of Quito, which filled a huge void that until that time had been the reality in Ecuador, as no professional pilot schools existed and studies for the career were limited to aspiring members of the Air Force. Aviation was, therefore, a great pillar of the country’s economy and development, reason for which it became a necessity to have institutions qualified to provide skilled and well-trained pilots in order to comply with the rigorous tasks and functions demanded by commercial aviation. The strong-will and tenacity of Captain Saltos allowed his dreams to come true, as two earlier established schools had been unsuccessful. ICARO (Instituto Civil Aeronáutico [Civil Aeronautic Institute], at that time), through resolution No. 28 of January 29, 1972, became the highest aviation school in the world, as all of its students received instruction at an altitude of 12,000 feet (3,600 meters). Captain Saltos, founder and General Manager of ICARO at that time, crossed the three Americas flying from the United States to Quito in a historic flight, in a Cessna 150 light airplane with a 150HP motor, making stopovers after every three hours of flight. On February 15, 1972, ICARO began to give instruction to the first class of private pilots, who eventually graduated on the 1st of September of the same year, making the dream to become Pilots of the Republic come true for those first 25 students. During its first quarter-century, ICARO has graduated more than four thousand (4000) private pilots, many of whom have professionalized as commercial pilots to work in national and international airlines. These students, the majority being distinguished professionals, businessmen, executives and university students, enroll in the training institute of the ICARO School in order to certify themselves as private, instrumental or commercial pilots, in accordance to their career goals.Appearing: Friday, June 4, 2010: Conference Day 2 2.30pm Panel session: Evolving fuel strategies
