Over the course of his career he has worked in senior research roles in both the university and government sectors, focusing on the use of applied social science to improve organisational practice and policy.

David was also instrumental in the establishment of the highly successful Graduate Certificate in Community Relations (Resources Sector) offered through the University of Queensland.

In 2006 David chaired the Steering Committee that developed the Leading Practice Guide on Community Engagement and Development, for the Commonwealth Department of Tourism, Industry and Resources. In the same year, he acted an external reviewer of Rio Tinto’s Global Sustainable Development Report. In 2002 and 2003, he chaired the selection panel for the ‘Sustainable Environment’ section of the Queensland Premier’s Excellence in Public Sector Management Awards. Prior to taking up his current position, David was Director of Research and Prevention at the then Queensland Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) for eight years. In this role, he was responsible for managing the Commission’s research and monitoring programs and, for the last two years, its corruption prevention program. He oversaw, and made substantial contributions to, in excess of 60 completed research projects, including several book length reports.
