Chairman & CEO of Grace Financial Limited. Grace Financial, established in early 2008 and based in Hong Kong, is a family office spin-off offering wealth management services to the family of origin and other “like minded” ultra high net worth private clients towards a goal of “wealth with a purpose”. Also serves as Executive Director of Sterling Enterprises Limited as well as boards of other local and overseas companies.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mr. Chen proceeded to obtain his undergraduate degree in economics from Claremont McKenna College and later an MBA from Columbia University in the United States. He started his career in merchant banking with Kleinwort Benson and worked, among other places, in Chicago, London, New York and Los Angeles from 1987-1989. Before returning to HK in 1993, Mr. Chen worked as a principal engaged in middle market leveraged buyouts in southern California. From 1993 onwards, he worked in the Chen family office (Sterling Enterprises Limited) with primary responsibilities in overseeing the investment activities, which comprise asset allocation and manager selection functions. The portfolio utilizes all asset classes, both traditional & alternative, with a global coverage.
He also serves on the grants committee of the family foundation, ZeShan (previously known as the Sterling Foundation).
Mr. Chen is a member of the U.S. based Russell 20-20 organization, a select group of investment managers representing US$8 trillion in AUM (assets under management) with a special focus on Emerging Markets. He also serves as a member of the Listing Committee of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He served as a member of the Takeover and Merger Panel of the Hong Kong Securities & Futures Commission from 2005 – 2008.
In recent years, in addition to managing the family assets, Mr. Chen has been actively involved with promoting & improving corporate governance with a special interest in family business situations. He is involved with organizations including the Institute for Private Investors, a New York based non-profit organization (where Mr. Chen serves as Faculty Advisor), and the joint HKUST/Kellogg Family Business Conference in 2002 and 2003. Moreover, in May 2004, Mr. Chen was
appointed visiting lecturer at the Zhejiang University City College Institute of Family Business Research in Hangzhou, China.
Mr. Chen is active in other community work as well, serving as a member of the Executive Council for the Hong Kong Council of Social Services as well as a trustee of the Hong Kong Council of Social Services Foundation, and a member of the Steering Committee for the Caring Company Partnership Scheme.
Mr. Chen also attends & serves on the Council of St. Andrew’s Church in Hong Kong as well as other ministries as a marketplace minister. He is married to Yuk Lynn Woo and have four children, ages from 1 to 15 years.
