Jonathan Bill
Head of Emerging Markets
Vodafone Internet Services

Jonathan’s role is to lead the development and deployment of internet and content services, initiatives and products for Vodafone’s footprint of operations outside of Western Europe including Africa, Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia. He is particularly focussed on proposition development for Emerging Markets. Prior to joining Vodafone Group Jonathan spent 3 years as Head of Internet Services in Vodafone Egypt, one of Vodafone’s largest Emerging Market operations there he lead the introduction of 3G, the roll out of ADSL and the acquisition and integration of one of the Middle East’s most substantial web destination players; Sarcom. He also increased mobile internet usage by over 2000% making Vodafone Egypt the largest ISP in the country. Jonathan joined Vodafone Egypt following 2 years as Head of Content in Vodafone UK. Before Vodafone, Jonathan held a variety of posts in the Media and Advertising industries including Director of Business Development for Reuters Media EMEA and Commercial Director for the online advertising and technology business Real Media 24/7. He is 38 and lives in London.

 
Ben McCahill
Director Mobile Strategy and Business Development
Tellabs

As Director of Mobile strategy and Business Development for Tellabs in EMEA, McCahill is responsible for defining Tellabs mobile strategy based on market analysis to help mobile operators succeed. McCahill builds customer relationships and delivers innovative and cost-effective mobile backhaul solutions to operators such as BT, Telecom Italia and Vodafone. He heads up the regional Mobile sales team and works closely with them, supporting and managing current customer accounts. McCahill joined Tellabs in 1993 and has held various roles across the company in R&D, Customer Services, Product Management as well as serving as Head of the regional Business Solutions Group in EMEA. He left Tellabs in 2003 to join e-Net, an operator in the fibre wholesale market and re-joined us in 2006 in his current role. McCahill has over 15 years experience in networking and 10 years in telecoms and prior to joining Tellabs he has worked in the UK, USA and the Far East. McCahill holds a Bachelor Degree in Engineering from the University College Dublin and also a Master of Science degree from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh.

Martijn van Engelen

Martijn is the director and owner of AATELCO, a company with over a decade of experience in recycling telecom and IT equipment. It recollects economic depreciated telecom equipment of the high demanding markets of the western world and reuses it in emerging markets in Africa. With his subsidiary company Second Life, Martijn strongly believes in fighting Electronic Waste in developing countries in Africa. A new recycling line for used IT equipment, led by an entrepreneur whose good quality is going further where others would stop, made him go to Africa. A platform is launched in Uganda, where Second Life trains local technical engineers and supervises the complete process of implementing telecom equipment in Uganda. It’s contribution to technical education, developing the country on information and communication technology. Improving the employment of Uganda led to the second award of the Foreign Direct Investment Award 2005. Recycled Technology, a term designed by Martijn, is the methodology of   reinvigorate economic depreciated telecom equipment with a thoughtful environmental approach, which is the new standard of sustainable business for the present and the future.
 
 
 
David Haigh

Brand Finance plc
David is the CEO and founder of Brand Finance plc, the leading independent brand valuation consultancy. David qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in London. He worked in international financial management then moved into the marketing services sector, firstly as the Financial Director of The Creative Business and then as Financial Director of WCRS & Partners. He left to set up a financial marketing consultancy, which was later acquired by Publicis, the pan European marketing services group, where he worked as a director for five years. David moved to Interbrand as Director of Brand Valuation in its London-based global brand valuation practice, leaving in 1996 to launch Brand Finance. David has represented the British Standards institute on the International Standards Committee working party on the standardisation of brand valuation methods and practices, whose standard (ISO 10668) is due for publication in the first quarter of 2010. He has worked in the area of branded business, brand and intangible asset valuation since 1991 and since January 1995 have specialised entirely in this area. David is a passionate writer and has written many articles for the marketing and financial press on branded businesses and brand valuation and is the author of numerous publications.  He also lectures on the subject of branded business, brand and intangible asset valuation at business schools around the world.

Dan Kirk

Dan Kirk is a Partner in the Telecoms practice in the London office of Value Partners.  He has been with the group since 2000.  In that time he has worked on projects across the convergent sectors in both Europe and emerging markets.  His projects include work with fixed and mobile operators in areas such as operational improvement and service development; a wide range of regulatory projects with both Governments and operators; and more recently work on organisational and process design. Between 2001 and 2007 he worked in the company’s Singapore office prior to joining the company he worked at the Competition Directorate of the European Commission. He has an MBA from INSEAD, a PhD from London and an MA from Cambridge.  He is married with 4 children.

VNL has developed a solar powered GSM system specifically designed to enable operators to provide sustainable - and profitable - services to rural areas where ARPUs are less than $2 a month. VNL is the first and only company to have found a way of building sustainable telephone networks for the three billion people (half the world’s population) who live in rural areas not covered by a mobile network. Of this number, some 1.6 billion people have no electricity and another one billion live in areas with unreliable access to power (GSMA figures). In February VNL’s was named as the ‘Best Green Programme Product or Initiative’ at the GSMA’s annual awards in Barcelona. In December, VNL was named as a Technology Pioneer 2010 by The World Economic Forum. In September it was named the third most innovative company - and the most innovative telecoms company – in the world in the Wall Street Journal’s annual Technology Innovation Awards. In November VNL was selected as a 2009 Top Pick and named as a company to watch in the wireless infrastructure market by Light Reading, a specialist telecoms analyst and publishing house. Rajiv is a veteran of the telecom industry and last year was named as one of the top 100 most influential people in the telecoms industry by Global Telecoms Business magazine. He is the Founder and Chairman of the Shyam Group of companies in India which has interests in a wide range of successful telecom ventures, guided by his entrepreneurial vision. In 1974, as a young electronics engineer, Rajiv pioneered the manufacture of low cost satellite TV equipment that brought cable TV to millions of village homes in India. Inspired by this revolution, he took telecom to the masses by installed wireless telephones in over 100,000 Indian villages. In 2009, Rajiv was inducted on the Board of Sistema JSFC, Russia. In addition to his business responsibilities, he is active in promoting the interests of the Indian telecom industry, and is presently the President of Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association of India (TEMA)..

Angel Dobardziev

Angel Dobardziev is Practice Leader, managing Ovum’s research on Emerging Telecoms Markets. In this role Angel leads Ovum’s research on telecoms technologies, market trends, and operator and vendor strategies in the fast growing telecoms markets of the emerging economies. Angel’s research focus spans across the wireline and wireless space of the telecoms service provider market, where he produced series of reports and tailored studies, and delivered numerous client workshops and presentations. Angel’s most recent work focused on mobile strategies in emerging markets, including a study on WiMAX, mobile content, strategies for low ARPU users, and a study on mobile banking. Angel has been in the technology and telecoms industry for 13 years in various roles with Ovum, where taken part and led research the areas of telco strategy and operations, fixed mobile convergence and substitution and next generation network strategies. In a prior role Angel was a Practice Leader in the IT Services area, where managed Ovum’s research into the markets and strategies of global IT Services players, and enterprises’ ICT outsourcing approaches. Angel is a frequent speaker to senior audiences, both Ovum’s clients and at industry conferences and events, and he is regularly quoted in key financial, industry and online media. Angel has a Batchelor’s degree in Law and an MBA from the University of Westminster.
