Chief Executive Officer,
Australiam Mobile Telecommunications Association
Chris Althaus is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA). Chris was appointed to this role in December 2005.
AMTA is the peak national body representing Australia’s mobile telecommunications industry and operates programs covering telecommunications policy, infrastructure, health/safety, recycling and law enforcement / national security. AMTA represents mobile Carriage Service Providers, handset manufacturers, network equipment suppliers, retail chains and other suppliers to the industry.
Before joining AMTA Chris was the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Trucking Association for 5 years. The ATA is the peak industry organization representing all aspects of Australia’s $30b road transport sector responsible for moving over 80% of Australia’s land based freight.
Prior to joining the ATA Chris spent 15 years in the forests sector in roles such as; Executive Director of Timber Communities Australia and Director of Market Development for the National Association of Forest Industries.
Chris has a Bachelor of Science from the Australian National University;
a Graduate Diploma in Economics from the University of Canberra; and
a Business Administration Diploma from Georgetown University, Washington, DC.

Bjørn Amundsen is responsible for the mobile coverage in Telenor in Norway and has had this position since 1994.
Current position; Vice President/Director Head of Mobile Network Coverage, Telenor Norway.
Prior to working for Telenor, Bjørn was Sales Director in WM-data for several years. He has also been employed in a bank and in the travel industry.
Bjørn is always "on the road", he tests and visits all of Norway and many parts of the other Scandinavian countries. He is a demanded speaker for many mobile events across the world.

Since joining iiNet as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) over five years ago, Greg has led the deployment of Australia's largest independent ADSL2+ and VoIP networks. iiNet is now the 3rd largest ISP in Australia and operates one of the largest telecommunications networks in the country.
Greg has worked in the ICT industry for over 20 years. He has masters degrees in Telecoms Management and Business Administration and has worked for both operators and vendors in Asia, Middle East and Europe.

At 28 years of age, Scott is New Zealand’s youngest leader of a telecommunications provider and was listed as the 18th most influential person in the 2007 PC World Internet top 20.
He was appointed CEO of Orcon in July 2007.
Under Scott’s stewardship Orcon has become New Zealand’s fastest-growing telecommunications provider. It is New Zealand's fourth biggest ISP, and the third largest internet wholesaler in New Zealand.
During his tenure as CEO, the company has been voted best ISP by PC World in 2009 and named Telecommunications Carrier of the Year at the annual TUANZ awards in 2008.
Orcon also won TUANZ awards for Internet Service Provider of the Year in both 2006 and 2007, and was named fastest broadband provider in New Zealand in a New Zealand Herald commissioned study by Epitiro late last year.
Scott has been a tireless lobbyist for LLU – local loop unbundling. Under his leadership, Orcon was the first provider to introduce new phone and internet plans following the Government’s decision in late 2006 to ‘unbundle’ the local loop, the copper wires that link homes to their neighbourhood exchanges.
The company successfully launched the LLU service in Auckland in March 2008 and in Wellington in February 2009.
Scott led the quik.co.nz business-to-business ISP, before joining Orcon in 2006 as GM of Operations and Regulatory.

Orcon is New Zealand’s fastest-growing telecommunications provider providing a range of broadband, dial-up, home phone and business internet products. It is New Zealand's fourth biggest ISP, and the third largest internet wholesaler in New Zealand.

Ravi Bhatia was the founding CEO of Primus Australia from its inception in 1995 and developed the company into a highly successful, facilities based carrier. He has also held the position of Chairman of Access Providers Ltd., a pioneer and a leader in wireless broadband services in Australia.
Ravi Bhatia is regarded as one of the pioneers of telecommunications competition in Australia and has a thorough understanding of all key aspects of telecommunications and technology business, including technology, sales and marketing, systems and people management gained through 38 years of international experience in the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia.

Rachel is an Australian expert on convergence. Her professional background encompasses film, television and new media production, IT and, telecommunications. She is Managing Director of Net Ventures, Australia’s foremost provider of enterprise online and mobile video applications, which develops and hosts several BigPond and Sensis video offerings.
Rachel is a regular speaker at major conferences in Australia and overseas, on topics as diverse as social networking, business models for online media, intelligent agents, consumer engagement and broadband policy. She has spoken at events and conferences held by the ABC, the Australia Council, the Australian Film Commission, AFTRS, AGSM, the California Governor’s Council for the Arts (USA), CCTV (China) DCITA, the Getty Center (USA), MILIA (France), Motorola (USA), Next Media (USA), the OECD (Italy), UCLA (USA), and XMedialab, among others. She has a particular interest in the cultural impact of new technologies, and the importance of culture on the marketing of new technology.
Rachel is also a director of the Australian Centre for Advanced Computing and Communications (ac3), Deputy Chair of Choice (the Australian Consumers Association), and National Vice President of the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA). She was co-founder of FIBRE, a pioneering broadband aggregator, successfully sold to market leader Sohonet in 2004. Rachel is a past director and chair of several other media, software and telecommunications companies, and a former senior executive with Film Australia and Film Victoria.
Rachel is a principal in Handshake Media, established for over a decade as a telecomms and new media consulting company, advising Federal and State governments on broadband and innovation policy. She is a director and co-owner of several privately-held software companies, and remains active in film and television production.
Rachel has also been a member of the Strategic Industry Leaders Group for the Digital Content Industry Action Agenda, and a member of the Working Party on Innovation in the Film and Television Industry. She is a judge of the International Emmy Awards and the Digital Emmy Awards, a past judge of the AFI Awards, and has also chaired the judging of the AIMIA Awards. She was recently a delegate to the Australia2020 Summit.

Shara Evans is the Founder and CEO of Market Clarity (www.marketclarity.com.au), a market research analyst organisation specialising in the Australian telecommunications market. Shara has a deep understanding of telecommunications technologies and services, and is an acknowledged expert in the area of convergence, and is an active participant in industry organisations such as the Australian Telecommunications User Group (ATUG), the Communications Alliance, and the University of Technology Sydney's Industry Advisory Network. David Forman is the executive director of the Competitive Carriers’ Coalition. The CCC was formed as a loose alliance in 2001 as a vehicle for the non-dominant, pro-competition carriers to present a single voice in support of policy and regulatory reform. It was incorporated as a formal industry association in August 2004. Combined, its members represent more than $5 billion of investment in telecommunications infrastructure.
Prior to joining the CCC, he was General Manager Corporate Affairs and Regulatory for Comindico, a position he held from 2002. Prior to that, he was Vice President Corporate Affairs with Redfern Photonics.

Simon Hackett is one of Australia’s best-known technology entrepreneurs. As managing director of national broadband trailblazer Internode www.internode.on.net, Simon leads Australia’s largest privately owned broadband company. Established in 1991, Internode has more than 150,000 broadband customers and 370 employees, a carrier-grade international telecommunications network and a range of value-added broadband services.
Simon leads Internode with a unique combination of technical insight and entrepreneurial energy. While renowned for its customer-friendly service, Internode constantly pushes back the boundaries of broadband innovation. In 2005, Internode was the first Australian company to launch commercial ADSL2+ broadband. In 2007, the company pioneered ADSL2+ Annex M services. In July 2008, Internode became the first national ISP to offer its customers direct access to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) as part of its standard service.
In August 2008, Simon’s achievements were acknowledged with the Telecommunications Ambassador award from the Communications Alliance. This annual award recognises an outstanding individual who has shown strong leadership and made a significant and visible contribution to the Australian communications industry. Simon won the Bulletin-Microsoft Smart 100 IT & Communications Award in 2004 and was an SA winner in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards in 2005. Simon is also a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society.

As Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Robert Hart is responsible for all of Qualcomm’s business development activities across Australia and New Zealand. Since joining Qualcomm in 2001, he has overseen the growth of the 3G cellular market in ANZ and the sale of all but one of Qualcomm’s products into this region.
Hart has spent more than two decades working in the telecommunications industry across Australia, Europe and Asia, and brings strong expertise in R&D, manufacturing, and international and domestic sales. Prior to joining Qualcomm, Hart worked at Ericsson where he oversaw the marketing of their various mobile infrastructure products, including GSM, WCDMA and CDMA 2000. During this time, he was responsible for growing Ericsson’s GSM market share with Telstra to 100%.

Born in Johannesburg, William Hearmon (Bill) is the Chairman of the African 3G Forum……a trade association for operators in Africa. Bill has a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, where he specialised in microwave systems and the stability of power systems. He then went on to a five-year stint for Siemens in Johannesburg and Munich, and then to Motorola for fifteen years reaching the position of Director of Sales for Greater Africa for Cellular Networks. Bill is an MBA graduate from the University of Cape Town, a Fellow of the SA Institute of Electrical Engineers and is the CEO of a number of his own companies based in Botswana and South Africa.

As the Vice President of APAC, Jari is credited with establishing and growing F-Secure’s presence in several countries in Asia Pacific, including its regional headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In his role, Jari is responsible for driving critical business functions such as channel strategy, branding and marketing.
Prior to his current appointment, Jari was the Sales Director for Southern and Eastern Europe, where he was responsible for F-Secure’s Service Provider business, in Munchen, Germany. An industry veteran, Jari joined F-Secure in early 2000 and was part of the business development team that led the Security-as-a-Service business model in the company.
Jari has extensive experience in the technology sector and has held senior management positions at leading technology organizations. He has previously worked with Telia Sonera as a Business Development Manager and was responsible for the Mobile Internet and Business Internet services, bringing quality services to the market in the late 90’s. He was also the Customer Service Director at Tellabs where he established support and training services and built a regional team to support the company’s existing partners in Asia Pacific while living in Singapore.
In his personal time, Jari’s leisure activities include windsurfing, motor biking, reading, watching movies and enjoying classical music. An ardent fan of sailing, he possesses his own boat and is an active member of a sailing club.

David Kennedy is a research director responsible for broadband and wireline research. Based in Melbourne, Australia, he co-ordinates Ovum's broadband research priorities across Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and Greater China.
David presents at major conferences in the region, and his comments are regularly sought by the Australian and Asian press.
Prior to joining Ovum in January 2006, David worked in both government and the private sector as an analyst and consultant, with a strong emphasis on linking research to policy and strategy development. Key roles have included Senior Policy Adviser to the Australian Communications Minister during the 1997 telecommunications reform process, Consultant to the Malaysian Government on its 1998 communications policy reforms, and General Manager for Strategy at the National Office for the Information Economy, with responsibility for research and policy development on convergence issues, and General Manager for Research at the Australian Department of Communications, IT and the Arts, where he led a team responsible for economic analysis of telecommunications and related markets.

Roger Kermode is an independent consultant who specialises in early stage media technology commercialisation and business development. He was the founding CTO at iPrime within the Prime Media Group where he led the specification and development of a hyperlocal integrated media publishing platform based on the Joomla Open Source Content Management System that is capable of serving over 100 sites with only a handful of staff. He was previously the Director, Innovation & Technology at the Smart Internet CRC and also led teams in Motorola who created and delivered home networking, content management, and wireless technologies into Motorola's product groups in China and the USA. He holds Ph.D. and Master's degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media lab, is a Fulbright Scholar, and also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Maha Krishnapillai is the Director of Government and Corporate Affairs for Optus with responsibility for Government, Corporate, Regulatory and Economic Affairs, Sponsorship and Community Relations.
Prior to joining Optus he was Macquarie Telecom's Group Executive, Carrier and Strategy where his responsibilities included industry strategy, carrier negotiation and regulatory and government liaison for Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. He also had overall executive responsibility for Macquarie’s mobile business and its Southern Regional office.
Maha has a strong background in the telecommunications industry where he has been instrumental in driving a number of reforms in the sector since deregulation.
Maha was a founder, and the elected President (2005) of the “Asia-Pacific Carriers Coalition” (APCC); the Singapore based association seeking to maximise pro-competitive policy and the benefits of competition in the Asia-Pacific Region.
Some of his other achievements include winning both the SPAN/Comms Day “Telecommunications Ambassador” Award and the Victorian Government “Face of ICT” Award in 2005. Maha has also worked with AUSTEL where he held a wide range of management positions.
Maha holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and post graduate qualifications in management.

With his diverse background in both the music and digital industries, Nick Love brings a rich and broad understanding to this key strategic role as the Business Development Director for Fox Interactive Media, Australia and Asia.
After starting his career in the legal profession in 1993, Nick held a range of senior management positions at ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) and Electronic Arts and ICE Interactive.
In his previous role as Business Development Director for Soundbuzz operations in Australia and New Zealand, Nick was responsible for business development and project management activities. Mark McDonnell is Senior Analyst, Telecommunications, Media and Technology at BBY Limited. His career encompasses roles as a business analyst, government policy adviser, management consultant and company director prior to his work at BBY in investment banking and stockbroking.
In the 1980s Mark worked in both policy and regulatory roles for the Australian government and as a business analyst for the then newly created satellite communications company, Aussat. Throughout the 1990s he gained considerable business experience as a management consultant, working for more than a dozen major manufacturing, service and banking enterprises in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, North America and Asia. He was also the founding CEO of ASTRA, the pay television industry association.

Gavin joined Sony Music in 1998 and has held a number of roles across the business including two years running the combined Digital and Physical Sales division of the business.
Prior to joining Sony Music, he worked at ABN AMRO in London and as a management consultant with Ernst & Young in both Australia and Eastern Europe.
Gavin completed his MBA qualifications from the Macquarie Graduate School of Business in 2003, holds a Bachelor of Commerce, and is a member of the Australian Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Most recently David held the position of Director of Government Relations and headed up a team responsible for representing Telstra’s policy and political interests with Federal and State Governments.
David joined Telstra in January 2006 when he was recruited to the company as General Manager, Government Relations.
Before joining Telstra, David worked as a Senior Adviser in the Cabinet Policy Unit from September 2003 to December 2005.
David was Chief of Staff to the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts from May 1997 to September 2003.

Prior to that Rod was the General Manager of Xtra and XtraMSN (Telecom’s ISP and Online Media businesses) which include an online alliance with MSN and also held various financial, commercial and business development roles in Telecoms online division prior to being appointed General Manager in 2001.
Prior to joining Telecom in 1998 Rods spent 7 years in the oil and gas exploration and production industry in various strategy, business development and commercial roles. He has a double degree in Economics and Commercial Law, is a qualified New Zealand Chartered Accountant and sits on a number of commercial and social venture Boards and Institutes. Luigi was appointed Director of Network Technology, Network Engineering in June 2007. In this role he is responsible for the engineering design of all technology platforms in Telstra’s core, edge, access, transport, satellite, and fixed radio networks, together with supporting Building Services technologies and their deployment into the Telstra’s next generation production environment .
In addition, as Titan Program Director, he has accountability for delivering Telstra’s wireline transformation program and system integration. Included in the role is accountability for key services migration including ATM/Frame onto Telstra next generation network and legacy platform exits, as well managing the scalability of Telstra’s Ethernet aggregation and IP/MPLS core networks. As a part of this role, he has strengthened the technology and engagement relationship with Telstra’s strategic partners, Alcatel Lucent, Cisco, Tellabs, Juniper, and Ericsson.
Prior to his current role, Luigi was seconded to New Zealand from 2005 to 2007, as Chief Operating Officer for TelstraClear , reporting to TelstraClear CEO. In that role, he was responsible many cross-company areas including Network , IT and Application operations, ISP operations, Service Delivery, Procurement, Customer Experience, Billing Operations, Revenue Collection and Fraud Management.
Luigi has more than 29 years’ experience in a range of roles with Telstra in the telecommunication industry. This has included various National General Manager roles within Telstra’s Network and IT Infrastructure Business Unit with accountabilities for delivering cost effective infrastructure across and beyond Australia . Responsibilities have included addressing challenges and opportunities that have faced Telstra Corporation in the de-regulated Australian telecomms industry, as well as in other offshore regulatory jurisdictions. Luigi’s accountabilities also included development of the engineering technology design for an FTTN open access model.
Luigi’s career highlights include a key deployment role on Telstra's Future Mode of Operation for digitizing Telstra's by June 2000, leading a United Nations team into the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan for an economic and technical evaluation of a US$34M telecommunication project in 1990, bidding for an offshore US$29M turn-key fiber and radio transmission project in the Sultanate of Brunei, involvement in aspects of post-war telecommunications reconstruction efforts in the Middle East, development of JV opportunities in China’s post- WTO reforms, and technology, engineering and integration accountability for delivery of Telstra’s Wireline transformation by December 2009.
Luigi has an Electrical Engineering degree graduating with First Class Honours, and a Master of Engineering Science degree.

Richard Windeyer joined the Department of Broadband Communications and the Digital Economy in June 2008 as a Special Adviser on the National Broadband Network. Before returning to the Department to work on the National Broadband Network Richard had worked in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Department of Transport on national security policy.
