 The Regional African Satellite Communications Organisation (RASCOM), created in May 1992 with its headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, is an intergovernmental commercial satellite organisation. It mission is “to provide, on commercial basis, efficient and economical means of telecommunications to all areas in African countries to meet their various ICT connectivity requirements using a Regional African Satellite System, complemented as necessary by any other appropriate technology and properly integrated into existing and/or planned national networks with the view to fostering the development and integration of Africa.” It has a current membership of 45 African countries.
On 21st December 2007 the RASCOM satellite was launched successfully from Kourou/French Guyana. Its commercial operations started in August 2008 with the connection of the Pan African e-network sponsored by the Indian Government for all the 53 African countries under the auspices of the African Union Commission.
RASCOM is by definition a satellite organisation and the RASCOM project is a long term commitment which means that more and more satellites will have to be launched in due course.
