Dr Mac Beggs is the Managing Director of GeoSphere Ltd, a Wellington oil and gas exploration consulting firm, and also currently the Deputy Chair of the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand and Convenor of the Resource Frontiers Programme for the Centre for Advanced Engineering (CAENZ). A geologist by profession, prior to founding GeoSphere in 1997 he held scientist and management positions with GNS Science, and worked for several years as an exploration geologist for a major oil company in the United States of America.

Albert is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction for all of Genesis Energy’s business interests. He also serves as the Chairman of the Genesis Oncology Trust as well as Chairman of Energy Online. His background has largely been in heavy industry, including oil and gas infrastructure development as well as the mining and power sectors. He has had more than 35 years experience both in New Zealand and internationally in technical, operational and senior management positions, concentrated particularly in the power industry over the past decade. He has had considerable experience leading businesses requiring political, regulatory and environmental management, both in New Zealand and overseas.

Gerry Brownlee was born and educated in Christchurch and has lived in the Ilam electorate all his life. After leaving St Bede's College, Gerry began his career in the family timber business. He trained to be a carpenter, gained several trade qualifications and gained first hand experience operating his own business. In 1980 he trained as a secondary school teacher and, taught at Ellesmere College, before going on to be appointed Head of the Technical Department at St Bede's College, where he taught until 1995. In 1996 he was selected as the candidate for Ilam, winning the seat with a majority of 10,090. He has held the seat comfortably since then. Gerry Brownlee has risen within the ranks and served on the front bench of the National Party, which of course won the last general election. Gerry Brownlee is ranked number three in Cabinet. He holds the portfolios of: Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Energy and Resources, Leader of the House, and Associate Rugby World Cup Minister.

William J. Based in New Plymouth, Chris Bush is General Manager of Origin Energy New Zealand. Chris has responsibility for overseeing Origin’s growing upstream interests in New Zealand. This includes • Preparing the Kupe Gas Project for commissioning and operations. • The acquisition and development of a number of Swift Energy’s assets including the Rimu, Kauri and Manutahi fields, two gas, oil and LPG production facilities and additional exploration permits • Overseeing a wide portfolio of offshore prospecting licences in Taranaki, Canterbury and Northland. • Leading representation of Origin Energy with Government, regulators and energy industry associates in New Zealand. David is a former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament. He graduated B.A., LL.B (Hons) from the University of Canterbury. At age 22 he was elected to the Christchurch City Council where he served for three terms (1971-80). In 1978 he was elected to Parliament for St Albans in Christchurch. He served as an MP for 18 years (1978-96). During the Lange and Palmer governments he was Minister of Trade and Industry (1984-88), Minister of Health (1987-88) and Minister of Finance (1989-90). From 1993-96 David served as Deputy Leader of the Opposition. Following his retirement from politics he returned to his former profession as a lawyer, becoming a partner in Buddle Findlay, specialising in public law. In December 2003, David was appointed Deputy Chair of the Commerce Commission. His governance experience includes chairing the Grid Security Committee, the Electricity Governance Establishment Group and the ACC. In 2000 he chaired the Ministerial Inquiry into the Electricity Industry. He also chairs the Education New Zealand Trust and the Advisory Committee on Official Statistics.

Dario has held a variety of management roles with Origin, primarily in the development of new products and technology. He worked in the UK, the US and NZ from 1986 to 1990 then from 1990 to 2000 was Vice-President of one of Canada’s premier engineering firms. He returned to NZ as CEO of Solid Energy in May, 2000. Don is a Director of ASB Bank, and has a number of past and current directorships of companies and business organisations in New Zealand, Canada and internationally. Julian has had a very active twenty years with a range of consulting firms, designing and managing hydro and other generation projects; 110kV and other subtransmission lines and commercial and industrial installations. Stuart is a Director of New Zealand Carbon Exchange (NZCX), an emissions trading company, and Frazer Lindstrom Limited, New Zealand's leading independent climate change and energy sector consultancy. Stuart has more than 20 years’ international energy sector experience. With a degree in Chemical Engineering he held technical and operations roles with Shell in Europe prior to moving to New Zealand in 1995. In his executive position with The New Zealand Refining Company, he led the negotiation of and finalised New Zealand’s first Negotiated Greenhouse Agreement. In 2003 he established Frazer Lindstrom, and in 2004, in anticipation of a move towards emissions trading, NZCX was formed. Stuart’s climate change expertise ranges from New Zealand and worldwide climate change policy to emissions accounting and emissions trading. Stuart works closely with his clients on climate change and energy matters and assists them with understanding the detail of climate change and energy policy and developing suitable strategies to fit their organisations’ outlook.

Nathan is now a Senior Consultant at Gentrack, working with both retail and network companies throughout New Zealand, Australia and the rest of the world. Bill Heaps is Managing Director of Strata Energy Limited, a company providing consulting services to energy industry stakeholders. In 2006, Robert Reilly joined Bill in Strata and recently Stephen Drew has joined the company. Strata Energy have developed a unique approach to marketing and operating demand-side management and distributed generation services in the wholesale and retail electricity markets. Strata Energy has an interest in Energy Response (PTY) in Australia and is managing the launch of Energy Response New Zealand. Bill is an electrical engineer and has over thirty year’s experience in energy and related industries. Keith Hitchings is the Managing Director of Quasar Systems a respected provider of Energy and Power Quality Metering Systems, SCADA & HMI, Process Control Instrumentation, and Industrial Automation Systems. Richard Krogh is the Chief Executive of Powerco Limited, leading the executive management team and managing the company’s broad range of business interests. Mr Krogh is an electrical engineer with over 12 years in electricity utility engineering, planning and operating. He also has significant experience in both gas and electricity asset management and general management in the distribution utility sector. Mr Krogh’s general management experience includes strategic planning, change and integration management, network pricing, commercial contract negotiation and management, organisation and process design, organisation culture and human resource strategy. His engineering experience encompasses network modeling and planning, conceptual design, economic/feasibility studies, project and contract management, maintenance management and utility asset management. I am an Electrical and Mechanical Engineer with wide experience in power generation, power systems and transmission and a recognized expert on all aspects of the design, construction and operation of small hydro schemes with wide experience on large schemes. I have reported on generation, transmission and distribution systems in New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, PNG, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Zambia and Iran. I am a frequent commentator and well known public speaker on electricity de-regulation and electricity markets who believes that many electricity market models are fundamentally flawed. I have written papers on markets and recent market failures that have been widely debated in New Zealand and overseas. I have a good understanding of nuclear power generation. I also lecture on "climate change" and why I believe that "The science is NOT settled". I have acted as an expert witness on litigation associated with hydropower schemes, power systems, cogeneration plants and transmission lines.

Janya has been involved in the electricity industry since 1993 as a Director for six years on the line company Alpine Energy Ltd servicing a rural - urban mix network in the central south island. Since 2000 she has been a Trustee on the consumer trust LineTrust South Canterbury which owns 40% of Alpine Energy Ltd. The remaining 60% are owned by local District Councils or their asset holding company. As a regular attendee to the ETNZ conferences, Janya was appointed as Chair of the Executive committee in May 2008. She brings to this role a long standing interest in the electricity industry (since before the reforms) and skills developed as a teacher of senior economics and accounting, and in a variety of accounting and audit roles while qualifying as an Associate Chartered Accountant.

Prior to joining Mighty River Power James held senior management positions with the financial markets division of ANZ Investment Bank in both New Zealand and Australia, and was a Director within the Business Consulting division of Andersen in Australia. He represents the company on CO2CRC, the Australian-based co-operative research centre for greenhouse gases, and the New Zealand Carbon Capture and Storage working group. He is also a member of the Government appointed Stationary Energy and Industrial Processes Technical Advisory Group which has been working with officials around the design and implementation of New Zealand’s proposed Emissions Trading Scheme. Can we any longer describe the legislative environment style as a “light handed, performance based, self regulatory”, or has it become “one-handed, log jammed and a costly, re-regulated” one!

Simply Energy was established in 2005 as a full New Zealand electricity market participant. Simply Energy directly supplies electricity to commercial and industrial consumers and purchases electricity from independent generators throughout New Zealand. Simply Energy has worked with a numerous independent generators on wind, coal seam gas, cogeneration and hydro developments to secure and settle power purchase agreements directly with end users.

Dr Tom Richardson is Chief Executive of New Zealand Crown Research Institute Scion. Scion has 350 science and support staff providing research services and new technologies to support the development of sustainable new materials and energy. Tom’s scientific background is in genetics. He established the genomics research group at Scion and a spin-out company “SignaGen”, which brought high-throughput DNA testing to the NZ ag-bio sector. His experience as a practicing scientist, new business developer and science manager has led to frequent assignments on advisory boards, external review panels and international science and trade delegations. His directorships include New Zealand’s Foundation for Research, Science & Technology (FRST). He holds a BA in Biology from Bucknell University and a PhD in Botany from Pennsylvania State University.

Ken Rivers was appointed CEO of New Zealand Refining Company Ltd on 16th August 2007. A chemical engineer by training and a graduate of Cambridge University, Ken has held a wide variety of leadership, technical, strategy and supply roles within Shell over the last 30 years , including the UK, the Netherlands and the Far East. His previous assignment was General Manager of Shell's Stanlow refinery & petrochemical complex in the UK. Ken has also been a past President of UK Petroleum Industry Association, Chairman of Eastham Refinery Ltd ( Shell/Nynas joint venture ), Council member of the Institute of Petroleum , and has latterly chaired the joint industry/regulator Buncefield Standards Task Group defining industry action to prevent another Buncefield type incident.

Tim joined GE Energy in January 2008 as CEO for Australia & New Zealand (ANZ). He is responsible for GE Energy’s ANZ operations, business development and growth strategies. Prior to joining GE, Tim worked with one of Australia’s leading power producers as General Manager of Development, being responsible for the business growth through generation development from both a strategic and financial perspective. With his development team Tim was responsible for identifying and progressing opportunities (including permitting, contracting and project manage) through to operational delivery. Tim has more than 13 years finance and business development experience in energy related industries. In his early career, he worked as a Management Accountant and Project Analyst in a multinational mining company and then as a Financial Analyst for a major Accounting firm. He moved on to a business development role and Director with an Australian power producer in 2001, working closely with the CEO devising and delivering growth strategies. In 2003, having managed the sale of the business Tim joined the acquiring business as Head of Corporate Planning & Development and was promoted as General Manager in 2005. Tim received his Bachelor Degree in Commerce from Melbourne University majored in Finance. Tim and his family are based in Melbourne.

Dr Peter Taylor is Acting Head of the Energy Technology Policy Division at the International Energy Agency in Paris. He leads the Division’s work to analyse and promote the role of energy technologies in achieving the three goals of the IEA: energy security, economic development and environmental protection, including producing the Energy Technology Perspectives series, one of the IEA’s flagship publications. Prior to working at the IEA, Peter was Technical Director of Future Energy Solutions (a business of AEA Technology plc), a major UK energy and environmental consultancy employing 180 people. At Future Energy Solutions he was part of the senior management team and had responsibility for maintaining and enhancing the technical expertise of the business. Previously Peter spent 15 years working in both research and consultancy on a range of national and international energy and climate change policy issues. He holds a BSc in Applied Physics from the University of Nottingham, and both an MSc in Environmental Technology and PhD in Energy Economics from Imperial College, London.

Mike Underhill joined the EECA team as Chief Executive in May 2007.
