Founding Partner,
Amsterdam & Peroff
International litigation and human rights lawyer, Robert R. Amsterdam, is sought out by companies who want to expand their business into geographies beyond the limits of mature markets. In his 25 years of practice, Amsterdam has represented multinationals and domestic companies in emerging markets as diverse as Russia, Hungary, Nigeria, Venezuela and Guatemala, effective particularly in cases where the legal and political collide. An expert in the field of state intervention and expropriation, high profile cases have also included shareholder disputes, corporate restructuring, fraud and asset recovery and multi-jurisdictional corporate litigation. Amsterdam is an early advocate of corporate human rights and corporate foreign policy. These concepts closely tie together legal and political strategies to create the most potent solutions for clients in countries which operate outside the rule of law. As an advocate for the rule of law, Amsterdam has both defended and prosecuted cases for and against governments. High-profile clients have included PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the Four Seasons Hotel Group and in 2003, he was retained by the former CEO of the Yukos Oil Company, Mikhail Khodorkovsky. His defense of Khodorkovsky, which has combined a complex legal and political response to the illegal conduct of the Russian Federation, has resulted in successful recourse to the Council of Europe, the European Union and numerous other international actors. His efforts in combination with those of his partner, Dean Peroff, and a highly talented legal team, have in September 2007, borne fruit in the landmark decisions rendered by the Swiss Federal Court and the Federal Court of the US in the Northern District of California. A sought-after speaker, Amsterdam has spoken on the rule of law, geopolitical risk, legal strategies in difficult jurisdictions and energy politics at leading international academic institutions including the Cato Institute, Carnegie Endowment, Chatham House and the Fraser Institute. Amsterdam is also a seasoned media commentator, with regular appearances on BBC, CNBC, CNN and Sky News and is frequently quoted by the international press.

Ian Gordon is a leading financial historian and a top performing retail broker. He is author of the highly acclaimed Longwave Analyst newsletter and is a frequent guest speaker. The son of a British military officer, Ian followed in his father's footsteps and graduated from The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He worked as a stock broker in Ontario for eight years before working in Management for three more years in Toronto and Vancouver. It was 1998 when Ian determined that the Longwave Theory was too compelling to ignore any longer. He began writing the Longwave Analyst and re-entered the sales side of the business. He accurately predicted the end of the massive equity bull market and also accurately predicted the beginnings of the current gold bull market (1999). By 2003, Ian was the #1 performer at Canaccord Capital (Canada's largest independent brokerage firm) a position he maintained until he left the firm in mid 2005. Ian currently serves as a Vice President of Bolder Investment Partners in Vancouver. This new home affords Ian the flexibility to access institutional investment accounts. Mr Webster is a graduate mining engineer from the University of Sydney. He has over 30 years of experience in the resources industry, including more than 10 years in managing director or chief executive officer positions. From 2001 to 2005, he was a senior executive at First Quantum Minerals Ltd (FQM), a Toronto Stock Exchange and AIM-quoted company, developing and operating copper mines in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mauritania. Most recently, he was in charge of FQM's Mauritanian activities, and prior to that he was the CEO responsible for the development of the Kansanshi mine in Zambia -- probably the world's most significant new copper mine in recent times. In 2000-2001, he was also a non-executive director of another major Zambian copper producer, Mopani Copper Mines Ltd, in which FQM held a major interest. Prior to his involvement with FQM, Mr Webster was a founding director and the CEO of an Australian base metals producer, Western Metals Ltd. During his six-year stewardship, Western Metals grew to become Australia's third-largest base metals producer, with annual production exceeding 260,000 tonnes of zinc, 100,000 tonnes of lead and 35,000 tonnes of copper. To achieve this growth, the company raised approximately US$600 million for the development of six new mines and a private port. In his earlier years as a mining engineer, he held senior management positions with the global resource companies, Homestake Gold of Australia Ltd and BHP Minerals Ltd. Mr Webster is a Fellow of both the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He has been a member of the Executive Committees of both the Australian Minerals Council and the International Zinc Association, and a non-executive director of numerous companies.
