Dr. Danny Beran is the CEO of Eastern Suburbs Medical Service an Accredited Deputising After Hours Medical Service covering the After Hours requirements of over 130 GP’s in Sydneys Eastern suburbs. In this capacity he has been mentoring local and overseas trained Drs. for over 20 years and ESMS has been awarded several Federal Government Grants for its social importance.

In addition to his VR General Practice experience clinically and in research, he has qualifications in Finance and Corporate Governance and is a Member of the AMA; a Senior Associate of the Financial Services Institute of Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD

Mark Cormack has been with ACT Health since February 2005 when he was appointed Deputy Chief Executive. The ACT Health Minister appointed him to the position of ACT Health Chief Executive in November 2006.

Mark has worked for the public health care sector in various capacities as a health professional, senior manager, policy maker, planner and industry lobbyist for 23 years.  He has a Bachelor of Applied Science and a Master of Health Management.
Mark has held a number of senior management positions within public healthcare organisations including the NSW Ambulance Service, Northern Rivers Area Health Service and ACT Health. These positions covered Policy & Planning, Clinical Operations and Corporate Services. He was also Executive Director of Nepean Hospital in neighbouring NSW.

Peter was elected as the Federal Member for Dickson in Queensland in November 2001 when, at the age of 30 he defeated Cheryl Kernot.

He was re-elected with an increased majority in 2004 and appointed as Minister for Workforce Participation, with responsibility for the Job Network, Disability Employment Services, Work for the Dole and improving transition to work opportunities for all unemployed Australians.

At the time of his appointment Peter was one of the youngest Minister's since Federation.

In January 2006 Peter was promoted to Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer. He worked closely with Peter Costello in areas including budget preparation, taxation, superannuation, prudential regulation, and competition and consumer policy.

Following his re-election in November 2007, and with the change of Government, Peter was appointed to Shadow Cabinet as Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation.

In September 2008 he was promoted to his current position, Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing.

Prior to being elected to Parliament, Peter had a variety of jobs. He started his working life at 12 - delivering newspapers, mowing lawns. He also worked after school as a butcher's boy-a job he continued until starting university. Peter went on to complete a Bachelors degree in Business.

He started in property at 18 and eventually owned businesses employing over 40 staff.

Peter was a police officer for 9 years, working in the Sex Offenders Squad, Drug Squad, and the then National Crime Authority. He left the police in 1999 to manage his business interests full time.

Pat Grier has been employed as an executive in the private health care industry for more than 20 years. In June 2008, he retired as Managing Director of Ramsay Health Care after joining the Company in 1988 and serving at the helm since 1994.  During this time, he oversaw the successful float of Ramsay Health Care on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1997 and growth in annual revenues from approximately $200 million to more than $2 billion (2007 financial year). He oversaw a series of successful transforming acquisitions which saw Ramsay Health Care grow to become Australia’s largest private hospital operator.
Prior to joining Ramsay, he was with Hospital Corporation Australia.
He has served as both President and Chairman of the Australian Private Hospitals Association and sits on a number of industry committees.  Pat served as an Executive Director on the Ramsay Health Care Board for 12 years and from 1 July 2008 continues as a non-executive Director of the Ramsay Health Care Board.

In his role as National Clinical Lead for the National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA), Dr Mukesh is responsible for leading a team of healthcare providers from multi disciplinary backgrounds, to assist in NEHTA’s liaison with the healthcare community and to provide input into the development of the NEHTA work program to deliver e-health for Australia.  A practicing General Practitioner, Dr Haikerwal is also the former head of the Federal Australian Medical Association (AMA) that is responsible for national policy development, lobbying with federal parliamentarians, co-ordinating activity across the AMA State entities and representing the AMA and its members nationally and internationally.

Mark joined Medicare Australia late in March 2007 after 25 years at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) where he worked in the areas of income tax, excise, consolidation of corporate groups, superannuation and GST.

Mark's position at Medicare is as Executive General Manager of the Business Solutions and Operations Division.  The division focuses on strategies for improving the effectiveness of Medicare Australia's service delivery and design and implementation of key business initiatives.  This includes the implementation of programs such as Medicare Easyclaim and delivery of new online services for customers.

The Business Solutions and Operations Division is responsible for channel management as it relates to claiming; enhancing Medicare Australia's relationships with providers, software vendors,  peak bodies, and establishing a governance process for the introduction and implementation of new business.

Prof. Stephen Leeder

Stephen Leeder is a professor of public health and community medicine at the University of Sydney.  He is Director of the Australian Health Policy Institute, a University establishment that provides a high-level capability for authoritative, independent, non-partisan analysis of major health policy questions which confront Australian and international health systems.  The Institute is the Australasian base of the Oxford Health Alliance (OxHA).

Professor Leeder is also co-director of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy, a joint enterprise with The Australian National University. A major theme of the Centre is the control of, and care for people with, serious and continuing illness including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic heart failure and complicated diabetes.

Professor Leeder has a long history of involvement in public health research, educational development and policy. His research interests as a clinical epidemiologist have been mainly asthma and cardiovascular disease.

In 2003-04, Professor Leeder worked at Columbia University, New York, in the Earth Institute and Mailman School of Public Health, developing a substantial report, based on research data and scientific interpretation, of the economic consequences of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in developing economies. The report, A Race against Time: the challenge of cardiovascular disease in developing economies, concentrated upon the macroeconomic consequences of CVD.

These have included Chief Executive Officer of Hunter Area Health Service and Deputy Director General, NSW Health. Katherine is a Professor of Pathology at the University of Newcastle.

During her time as Chief Executive Officer, Hunter Health was recognised as one of the most innovative and successful health services in Australia.

At NSW Health she led the Clinical Service Redesign Program, an ambitious program of clinical service reform across NSW Health which led to substantial improvement in access to emergency departments, elective surgery and innovative programs for chronic disease and aged care management.

She is a member of the Australian Commission for Safety & Quality in Healthcare and Chair of the Steering Committee for its National Hand Hygiene Initiative

Nigel Milan

Mr. Nigel Milan is currently National Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) of Australia. Prior to his current appointment he had a distinguished career in broadcasting, in the public and private sectors, here in Australia and in New Zealand.  Mr. Milan both holds and has held a number of non-executive directorships in both the private and public sector. 

He was Managing Director of the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) from February 1998 until early 2006. Under his tenure SBS’s television and radio audiences grew significantly as did the quantity and quality of Australian produced programmes on the network. 

In Australia, Mr. Milan had a very distinguished commercial radio career in leadership roles in the Macquarie, Bond Radio and ARN networks. He is credited with taking two Sydney radio stations – 2GB and 2UE – from the bottom to the top of the audience ratings.

Mr. Milan is also a previous Chief Executive Officer of Radio New Zealand.  In 1996, Mr. Milan was named Radio Broadcaster of the Year for his service to New Zealand’s broadcasting industry. An earlier award in Australia, named Mr Milan Media Executive of the Year.

He returned to Australia to become Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Radio Network, then Australia’s second largest commercial radio network. He significantly grew the business both by organic revenue growth and by strategic acquisition.

For eight years, Mr Milan was Chairman of the Fred Hollows Foundation, one of the most successful non-government organisations in Australia, with operations in 46 countries

Greg Mundy is the Chief Executive of Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA) the national peak body for providers of residential care, community care and housing for older people.  Greg has an extensive background in the aged and community care sector and in the broader health and human services field.

Before joining ACSA Greg was a senior executive in the Victorian Government Department of Human Services. Greg was responsible, at different times, for various aspects of aged care, community care, mental health and other programs.

Greg has a master’s degree in sociology from the Australian National University. He was born in England and educated in England, New Zealand and Australia.

Andrew Podger AO

Andrew Podger is National President of the Institute of Public Administration Australia and Adjunct Professor in public administration at both the ANU and Griffith University. He is also a consultant on health policy and public sector governance.

Since retiring, Andrew has completed a wide range of consultancies including chairing a review of military superannuation, advising on budget reform in the Philippines, chairing a review of the ANZ School of Government’s Executive MPA degree and participating in a review of its research program, and chairing a review of the culture of Australian Defence Force training establishments. He has also published articles and spoken frequently on health policy and public administration.

Before his retirement from the Australian Public Service in 2005, he chaired a task force for the Prime Minister on the delivery of health services in Australia.

Prior to that, he was the Public Service Commissioner for three years following six years as Secretary to the Department of Health and Aged Care.  He has also headed the Departments of Housing and Regional Development and Administrative Services.

Originally a mathematician, Andrew has had a long career in social policy and financial management.  Apart from the Public Service Commission and the departments he has headed, he has worked in the departments of Finance, Prime Minister and Cabinet, Social Security and Defence and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Prue was appointed as the Executive Director of the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) in July 2000.  Prior to taking up this position, she was the Australian Medical Association’s Director of General Practice and e-Health (7 years).  Prue has worked at AHHA previously in the role of Deputy Director (3 years).  Former roles have included Adviser to the Commonwealth Minister for Health (3 years), Senior Officer Policy Development Division (Workforce) Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health (1 year) and Secretary of the Australian Nurses Federation ACT Branch (8 years).  Prue trained as a nurse at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Prue has a Master of Population Health, ANU (1999).  She is also qualified as an Arbitrator (University of Adelaide 2002) and Mediator (Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators 2001) and has a Corporate Directors’ Diploma (1999).

Prue has served on several Boards of Directors, including 5 years on the ACT Health Community Service Board.

After 13 years as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Ramsay Health Care Limited, Chris Rex took over the role of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ramsay Health Care on 1 July 2008.  Chris has played a key role in developing the Company’s excellent record in hospital management.  As COO, Chris was responsible for hospital operations, human resources, corporate support services and health fund negotiations.  He has played a pivotal role in building Ramsay’s management expertise and his ability to run hospitals efficiently and effectively is widely acknowledged.  Chris has been instrumental in setting Ramsay’s growth strategy, a strategy which has seen the company’s revenues expand more than 10-fold over the past decade and included the transforming acquisitions of Affinity Healthcare and Ramsay’s first major offshore acquisition of Capio UK, the UK’s fourth largest independent hospital provider.

Prior to joining Ramsay Health Care in 1995, Chris worked as a manager in the public health service in the United Kingdom and subsequently moved into the private sector where he worked for BUPA the UK’s largest Health Insurer.  In 1988, he moved to Australia, as General Manager of Macquarie Hospital Services.

Chris is a Board member of the Schizophrenia Research Institute, a non-profit, National Health and Medical Research Council accredited, independent research institute undertaking world-class studies to understand the causes of schizophrenia.  In October 2008 Chris was elected as President of the APHA.

After completing his Electrical Engineering degree and subsequent Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering, David started his career as a research and development engineer specialising in Cardiology and Intensive Care.  He was responsible for development of numerous electromedical devices to support clinical patient care and applied research.

David completed in MBA in 1990 and moved into the management of high technology in medicine before he moved into an information technology management role for a large NSW public hospital area health service. 

In 1997 David joined the Sisters of Charity Health Service which own the St Vincent’s Group of Public and Private hospitals.  His role as Chief Information Officer was to integrate the three NSW based IT departments, manage a cultural change process and develop the organisations new IC&T vision and strategy. 

David’s passion is to support clinicians to provide better practice patient care by the pragmatic application of engineering and computer science.  The St Vincent’s Darlinghurst Campus has been using an electronic clinical information system for over 10 years and is now perusing several cutting edge technologies using RFID and voice recognition technologies to enhance clinical communication, efficiency, effectiveness and risk management processes.

Before taking up the position of SA Health Chief Executive in 2006, Dr Tony Sherbon had 18 years experience in clinical and administrative management within the NSW and ACT health systems.
 
Dr Sherbon has overseen the design of the SA Government’s Health Care Plan and is now overseeing its implementation.
 
In accordance with this plan, Dr Sherbon’s future aims for SA Health are to develop primary care strategies, improve patient access to the SA’s acute hospitals, provide safe, high quality services, improve the care of the mentally ill and provide a safe workplace.
 
Dr Sherbon is Chair of National E-Health Transition Authority, a past chair of the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council and a Board member of Bio Innovation SA.

Mr Varghese has over 30 years experience in the Australian public sector in leading multifaceted government agencies covering transport, education, training, employment and primary industries.  Mr Varghese has an outstanding track record as a Chief Executive capable of running multifaceted businesses with a determined focus and proven ability to deliver outcomes with excellence and innovation.  He has successfully driven and implemented the Queensland Government’s Smart State reform agenda in Main Roads, Education, Training, Employment and more recently, Primary Industries and Fisheries.

Mr Varghese has a professional and passionate interest in service delivery and best practice management.  He is the creator of the award winning “Three Learning Frames” management approach, which aligns outcomes with congruent relationships, structures, systems and capabilities.  He was awarded the Centenary Medal for services to the Public Sector.

Robert Wells

Menzies Centre for Health Policy

Robert is Director of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and Executive Director of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the Australian National University, Canberra. He works on a range of health policy and systems issues, including primary care, private health insurance, rural health and health workforce. He has participated in national advisory committees on neurosciences research and attracting greater private sector investment in health and medical research.

Robert came to the ANU in 2004 from the Australian Department of Health and Ageing where he had many years experience as a senior administrator in areas such as research, Commonwealth/State relations, health workforce, safety and quality and management of the programs for better management of major diseases such as cancer, diabetes and mental health and rural health programs. He was involved in the establishment and subsequent operations of the Australian Council on Safety and Quality in Health Care and the National Institute of Clinical Studies. He was formerly the secretary to the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Dean Westcott

Dean has held a number of senior finance positions in the NHS and has worked within the acute, primary care & health authority sectors.

He is a past Chair of ACCA’s Health Network Panel, representing over 3,000 members working in UK healthcare.  Dean has worked on a number of international healthcare projects in mainland Europe, Australia, USA, China, New Zealand and Singapore.

He was instrumental in the creation of ACCA’s UK health manifesto –
Accounting for the nation’s health. This manifesto was supported by the UK
Department of Health and received a Ministerial launch in Parliament in
December 2006.

Dean is a member of ACCA’s governing council and Chairman of ACCA’s Finance Committee.

Dean is also Chairman of ACCA’s International Public Sector Technical Issues Committee.

Liesel Wett
Acting CEO
Australian General Practice Network

Liesel has held senior positions in the Australian Health care system, most currently as Deputy CEO with AGPN, working with all levels of government and key decision makers to develop future primary health care initiatives and to be delivered by the Divisions Network.

With a background in senior health management, supported by two Master’s degrees (MPH, MBA), Liesel has been able to drive the agenda for better primary health care in Australia. With over ten years experience working with general practice this has enabled Liesel to oversee the management of a number of large projects at AGPN, such as the National Immunisation Program, Rural Palliative Care, GP Aged Care Panels, Effective Resource Management and other Quality Use of Medicine activities.

Stuart is the Executive Officer of the Victorian Division of the Planning Institute of Australia.  Prior to this role he was the Manager of Corporate Services of the former Office of Gas Safety which was Victoria’s regulator of gas safety.  His other previous roles have included working in senior management of the Office of the Surveyor General Victoria, which involved responsibilities for regulation and supervision of the surveying profession including administration of the Surveyors Board of Victoria, regional planning and coordination, asset and contract management with Parks Victoria, project management and student representation with RMIT University, Town Planning and Land Surveying in the private sector.  His voluntary activities have included being a Ministerial appointee to the Mt Buller & Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board, Treasurer - Institution of Surveyors Victoria, Vice President - Victorian Snowsports Association, holding a directorship of Skiing and Snowboarding Australia, convening conferences and alpine skiing events.
