Mary Foley

Mary Foley has pursued a unique career in Australian health care working successfully at senior levels in the corporate world, Federal and State governments and the not-for-profit sector.

In her most recent role as Chief Executive of St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney (2001-2008), Mary successfully brought about the merger of some of Sydney’s leading public and private health care and medical research institutions into an integrated, highly effective group which provides public teaching hospital, private hospital, residential aged care, sub acute, community and medical research services.

From1991 to 2000, Mary held senior corporate positions in developing private health care with Mayne Nickless Limited. As General Manager Diagnostic Services and Director of Acquisitions, Mary established Mayne’s diagnostics division which is now the Symbion company. Mary was awarded Business Woman of the Year for NSW in 1998 for her achievements at Mayne Nickless. In 2003, Mary was awarded the Centenary Medal by the Federal Government for service to Australian society in business leadership.

Prof. Stephen Leeder

Australian National University

Stephen Leeder is a professor of public health and community medicine at the University of Sydney.  He is Director of the Australian Health Policy Institute, a University establishment that provides a high-level capability for authoritative, independent, non-partisan analysis of major health policy questions which confront Australian and international health systems.  The Institute is the Australasian base of the Oxford Health Alliance (OxHA).

Professor Leeder is also co-director of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy, a joint enterprise with The Australian National University. A major theme of the Centre is the control of, and care for people with, serious and continuing illness including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic heart failure and complicated diabetes.

Professor Leeder has a long history of involvement in public health research, educational development and policy. His research interests as a clinical epidemiologist have been mainly asthma and cardiovascular disease.

In 2003-04, Professor Leeder worked at Columbia University, New York, in the Earth Institute and Mailman School of Public Health, developing a substantial report, based on research data and scientific interpretation, of the economic consequences of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in developing economies.

Lynette is Chair of the Menzies Centre for Heath Policy - a joint venture of the Australian National University and Sydney University. She is also Director and Founder of PALM Consulting Group, a boutique management consultancy providing support for leaders of national enterprises and numbering over sixty private, public and not for profit sector leaders amongst its clients, including ANZ Australasia , NRMA, NSW Cancer Institute, LCM National Health Care, National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre, the Private Health Insurance Advisory Council and LCM National Health Care.

Lynette’s work is focussed primarily with Boards, CEOs and Executives in the areas of organisational repositioning, executive development and coaching, board dynamics and facilitation of high level forums.  Lynette was the 2005 Telstra ACT Business Woman of the Year, Lead Facilitator of the Indigenous Stream at the 2020 Summit and Facilitator of the NSW Premier’s roundtable of the Health Workforce and the Australia/UK bilateral Conference on future health funding.

Karim holds an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM), a Bachelor of Philosophy and a Bachelor of Theology from the Lateran University in Rome.  His varied professional experience has covered areas as diverse as political lobbying, management consulting, international welfare and journalism, including war corresponding in Beirut.

Paul McBlaine is a Director in KPMG’s Business Performance Services with over 25 years of management and professional services experience with a large proportion of his time spent in healthcare industry both in the United States and Australia. 

Paul has led substantial reform programs in hospitals and hospital systems delivering results in process and program improvements, simplification of patient flow, improved capacity utilization, cost monitoring, management and improvement, as well as labour and non-payroll cost reduction. Significant engagements in some of the largest health care organisation in the US, e.g., St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital, Houston Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, Cedar-Sinai Medical Center, and Trinity Healthcare, helped these clients organize and implement management restructuring, strategic repositioning, operational effectiveness, process redesign, and executive coaching. 

Paul has designed and delivered leadership capability development, healthcare process evaluation, workflow reengineering, and operations improvement in over 150 hospitals in the US and Australia and has personally coached over 500 front-line managers and directors.  Prior to joining KPMG, Paul work for leading firms such as Baxter International, West Hudson a division of Cardinal Consulting and Cerner Corporation.
