Mr Arndt, a civil engineer with additional training in transport planning and economics, has more than 20 yrs experience in the transport sector around the world with a focus on rail, road and urban projects. A former consultant, Mr Arndt joined the EIB as a transport sector specialist. He has recently taken over the management of the EIB's Rail and Road division within the Project's Directorate, which handles appraisal and monitoring of all projects financed by the EIB in those sub-sectors, as well as advisory services and policy studies.

This is a major opportunity for Eurostar with significantly reduced journey times and greater connectivity. Maximising the commercial opportunity offered by this move is key. Prior to this role she was Head of Business Sales in the UK with responsibility for Corporate and TMC relationships as well as New Business. Before joining Eurostar, Louisa spent 7 years working for British Airways in roles ranging from Airport Manager in Norway, Corporate Account manager in the UK and Alliances Manager.

Ian Brown is Managing Director of Transport for London’s London Rail directorate and Chairman of the Docklands Light Railway. Transport for London is the Mayor of London’s transport agency for the capital. He is responsible for implementing the Mayor’s strategy to provide a full integration of National Rail passenger & freight services with London’s transport network and taking forward major National Rail projects in London, including the introduction of the London Overground and major rail infrastructure upgrades. Docklands Light Railway is also taking forward a series of major enhancements including additional capacity and new extensions as part of London’s 2012 Olympic Transport plan. Prior to joining TfL, Ian had a wide range of experience in the rail industry; he was Managing Director of RailFreight Distribution for eight years where he introduced Channel Tunnel rail freight services in conjunction with rail operators and forwarding agents in Spain, France and Italy. Ian was also a member of the Milan based Freight Leaders Club. Ian was previously a member of the Chairman’s Policy Unit at the British Railway’s Board with responsibility for freight. Other BR positions included InterCity Manager, West Coast Main Line, and Chief Passenger Manager at London Midland Region.

François Coart joined Eurotunnel in January 2006 as Director of Europorte 2. He is responsible for launching the activity of this subsidiary and reports directly to Jacques Gounon, Chairman and Chief Executive of Groupe Eurotunnel. Europorte 2 obtained a licence as a rail freight operator in February 2004 and performed its first train on August 23rd 2007. Prior to joining Eurotunnel, François Coart held positions in the two largest railway equipment manufacturers, Bombardier and Alstom Transport. He has a significant background in marketing analysis, international business and technical knowledge of railways products and services. Whilst with Bombardier, François Coart was responsible for products and marketing policy for the Belgian and European Markets. At Alstom Transport, he held a number of senior positions, amongst them Business Development Director for Western Europe and Vice-President for Sales and Marketing in France. François Coart, 42, is a dual national, French and Belgian. He studied at the Catholic University of Louvain, graduating as an Ingenieur in Business Administration.

Since January 2004, Jean-Michel Dancoisne, a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole des Mines in Paris, has been Chief Executive Officer of Thalys International, a subsidiary of SNCB, SNCF and, DB AG which is in charge of the international high-speed train service linking Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne. He previously managed an intermodal company. From 1990 to 1995, he played an active role, as the first Chief Executive Officer of “Grandes Lignes International”, in setting up the SNCF’s international passenger structures and the operational launch of Eurostar. Prior to that he held several management positions at the SNCF, which he joined after starting his career at the French Ministry for Industry.

Educated at the University of Dundee, Nottingham-born Ian Dobbs spent 16 years with British Rail, progressing from graduate operations management trainee to Divisional Director at Great Eastern, where he was responsible for 5,000 employees. Between 1988 and 1993 Ian steered the Great Eastern division through several major reorganisations, significant work practice reforms and a major capital works upgrade. Ian was soon headhunted by the Victorian Government in Australia to lead its transport reform agenda as Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Public Transport Corporation. Ian restructured and reformed the public transport industry in the state with successes including a reduction in the state subsidy pa of over $250m with total cumulative savings of $1 billion and introducing quality and safety accreditation to all businesses. Ian also achieved previously unattained operational quality levels on all modal services. Ian is married with two teenage children. In 2005 Ian persuaded his family to leave the sunshine of Australia to come back to England after accepting the challenge of heading up Stagecoach’s rail division, replacing retiring chairman Graham Eccles.

Susan Goldsmith is currently Finance Director to National Express Group PLC, Rail businesses. National Express Group PLC is a leading international passenger transport company and the UK’s best performing train operator, employing over 40,000 people worldwide. It operates the UK’s premium intercity railway National Express East Coast, linking the capitals of England and Scotland as well as running services throughout the East of England, an airport service to Gatwick and commuter services between London and Essex. Since qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1989, Susan has performed a variety of senior finance roles across the Retail, Media and latterly Transport sectors. Post qualification she joined the Leisure and Entertainment Group the Rank Organisation, in the Corporate Finance Department, and led a large part of the Groups M & A activity over a four year period. A move to the retailer Kingfisher Plc followed to take on the role of Director of Investor Relations. Susan subsequently spent four years as Financial Controller of Woolworths PLC, part of the Kingfisher Group, before joining the Bertelsmann Media Group (Five TV, RTL, Sony/BMG) where she held roles as Finance Director and CEO across a number of its mail order, publishing and e-commerce businesses. The move to National Express Plc followed five years later. Susan is married with two children. Her interests include travel and adventure sports.

Active in Brussels since 1993 as a lobbyist and manager of international associations and groupings. Her dual strengths - language and business management skills (MBA) - qualify her well to tackle European multicultural issues and the challenges facing companies in their respective markets. At UNIFE (from 1993 to 1997) she helped to develop the railway industry association, lobbying for multimodal, combined transport, the environment, EU Framework Programmes for R&D and CEECs. This gave her a very solid grounding in topical issues on the rapidly changing European railway market and familiarised her with the roles played by the various operators and stakeholders. After a brief spell at a European tobacco association in 1998-1999, in 1999 she joined Europengineers eeig (5,000 staff working in 10 design offices active in 45 countries) to coordinate and market its activities. Here she continued to develop her railway know-how, focussing on infrastructure. In November 2004 she joined ERFA, and in January 2005 was made its Secretary General, serving the organisation's 25 members from 13 countries by drawing on her 12 years of experience with European economic issues.

Bob Herritty is the Alcatel-Lucent Transportation Market Director and brings to the role more than 20 years experience of the transport industry. He has previously held roles inside Alcatel-Lucent as the Vertical Markets Sales Director in the UK, Managing Director of Alcatel's Saft Power Systems Ltd business unit in London and Managing Director of Saft Singapore (pte) Ltd in Singapore. Bob also spent 14 years developing business for Alcatel transport oriented speciality business units in North America. His experience has included membership of IEEE SCC29 writing US standards for battery systems; he has been a commissioner on the Production Industries Commission of the London Development Agency and currently is the Alcatel-Lucent representative on the Confederation of British Industry, Council for Wales. Christopher M A Jackson (47) was born and brought up in the southern suburbs of London, where he still lives. He is married, with two daughters. He was educated at Eltham College, and studied Business Administration & Transport Planning (Combined Honours) at the University of Aston in Birmingham. Chris has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport & Logistics since 1985, and was elected as a Fellow in 1997. He has also been a member of the UK’s Railway Study Association for more than 20 years. Chris joined Railway Gazette International as Editorial Assistant in April 1982. Two years later he was appointed Production Editor, in which post he oversaw the transfer of the magazine to computerised production. He became Assistant Editor in 1987, and has been Deputy Editor since 1991. In 2006 Chris was appointed as Editor. He is also Editor of the urban railways yearbook Metro Report and has been Managing Editor of the fortnightly newsletter Rail Business Intelligence since its launch in 1995. Over the past 23 years, Chris has travelled extensively for the magazine, visiting and reporting on railway developments in more than 30 countries.

Berend Jan (Bert) Klerk has been Chairman of the Board of Management of ProRail since its start in January 2003. ProRail is responsible in The Netherlands for constructing and maintaining the rail infrastructure, managing and utilising capacity, and controlling train traffic. Mr Klerk is also Vice-Chairman of the Association of European Railinfrastructure Managers (EIM), Member of the Administrative Board of the European Railway Agency and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of GVU nv, the municipal public transport company of Utrecht. Mr Klerk gained his Master’s degree in Political Economy at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 1975. He joined the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 1977 and became Director of the Chemicals, Building and Business Department in 1993. He left central government service in 1995 and joined the Municipality of The Hague as Managing Director of the Department of Urban Development and Economic Affairs. In 2000 he joined Railinfrabeheer, now part of ProRail.

Mr Kovács first joined the railway business in 1987 when following graduation from the Transport Faculty of the Karl Marx University of Economics in Budapest, he started working at the freight forwarding department of Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurth Railway Corp. (GySEV Corp.). He joined MÁV, the Hungarian State Railways Co. in 2003. Prior to becoming Deputy CEO of MÁV Cargo ZRt. (1st January 2006), the private operator, he had already headed the rail freight business unit of MÁV for three years where his main task was to execute major reforms to ensure a smooth separation.

Hans Leister studied Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen at the University Karlsruhe. As public service in federal government he was transferred to the federal state of Brandenburg after the german reunification, where he initiated a working group for the strategic development of the regional rail system in the capital region of Berlin/Brandenburg. With the rail reform Hans Leister changed to Deutsche Bahn, where he was responsible for the regional rail services in Berlin and Brandenburg and group representative for the state of Brandenburg. End of 2000 Hans Leister changed to Connex, where he was responsible for the passenger rail operations. Since 2004 he is second Managing Director of Connex Verkehr GmbH, the german Connex holding for all passenger operations. Hans Leister is now the Managing Director, Germany for Keolis and he is also overseeing the Deutschland-Takt programme which focuses on integrated public transport timetabling in order to optimise infrastructure investment.

Paula recently joined Eurostar’s growing Environment and Energy team, and is charged with overseeing the implementation of the initiatives which form the company’s long-term environment and energy strategy, working alongside a centre of expertise within the company on environmental and energy issues and activities and ensuring that Eurostar remains a leader on these issues in the travel and transport sector. Paula has been at Eurostar for 14 years, with her most recent role as Commercial Project Manager, managing the implementation of the commercial aspects of Eurostar’s move to St Pancras International and on to HS1 (the UK’s first high-speed rail line). Prior to that she had a variety of commercial and operational roles within Eurostar, including Customer Services Duty Manager, running the busy terminal at Waterloo International.

Arthur Martini’s career started in the international power plant business. In the late eighties Mr. Martini was CEO of a Joint Venture (Power Plant Manufacturing) in Istambul/Turkey. He then was CFO of a company for microbiological remediation of contaminated soils (Philipp Holzmann Group) and later joined Lyonnaise des Eau in Paris and Berlin as Vice President of the Water Privatisation Business in Central and Northern Europe. The full privatisation of the Rostock Water Works was a pioneer project at that time. In the late nineties Arthur joined Vivendi, having bought the majority of the largest private Railway operator in Germany. He became Managing Director of that Group of Companies which later became “Connex Germany” which recently changed its name again to “Veolia Germany”. Before Mr. Martini was appointed Secretary General of Netzwerk Privatbahnen early 2005 he was working in the field of executive search for Egon Zehnder International and he was partner of a medium sized Law Firm in Berlin.

Guy Mason is Chief Information Officer and Director of Information Systems at English Welsh & Scottish Railway Group and also Executive Director of Transeo, leading the Joint Venture between EWS Group and Thales, the French electronics, defence and aerospace group. In his EWS role he is responsible for all the systems and technologies associated with managing the EWS businesses across the Group’s brands including English Welsh & Scottish Railway, Euro Cargo Rail and Axiom Rail. In his Transeo role he is responsible for steering the growth of an international rail and transport focused systems and technology business. Guy sits on the steering group for the European Rail Industry's approach to information systems and technology integration and interoperability - to reduce cost and improve service of rail transportation across Europe. EWS is the UK's primary freight railroad. EWS’ services operate 24*7, across the entire rail network in Britain, making EWS Britain’s only truly national rail freight operator operating 1100 trains a day using 500 modern locomotives. EWS also provides infrastructure engineering trains for Network Rail’s maintenance and construction work and runs over 1,000 special passenger trains each year, including steam trains and prestige services. EWS has taken a lead in the last five years in introducing new technologies and enhancing the application of systems to the railway – and now operates an extensive European fully converged data and voice network, has developed ground breaking real time systems and extended the automation of business processes across the Group’s activities. Guy graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Economics and spent several years in the oil and chemical industry before joining Coopers & Lybrand as a management consultant in Consumer, Distribution and Retail Information Systems. Since the mid 1990s he has had a number of international roles in the Engineering, Transport and Distribution sectors, joining EWS in late 2001 and forming the Transeo Business in 2005.

Michael Robson, Secretary General of the European Rail Infrastructure Managers (EIM), is a time-served railwayman having been in the industry for 35 years. During this time he has held various senior positions. He has experienced of working in an integrated railway, British Rail, a private stock market listed infrastructure company, Railtrack, and a company limited by guarantee and privately financed, Network Rail. Working in these three different environments has given him a unique insight into railway structures there complexities and cultures. During his career, he has been involved in Operations, Performance, Timetabling, and Contract Management, Passenger and Freight Marketing and other retail activities in addition to the usual General Management and Project activities. His previous post, prior to taking over as the EIM Secretary General, was as the Head of European Affairs for Network Rail where he was responsible for developing and implementing the Network Rail policy on European issues. He sees his current role as promoting the railway, and in particular the interests of infrastructure managers, at all European levels including interfacing with the European Commission, Council of Ministers and MEPs. The other key role consists in ensuring that the EIM views are heard in the European Railway Agency (ERA) discussions on TSI development and in other standardisation bodies involved in this area. Michael is married with one daughter. His hobbies include walking, gardening, travel, and good food and wine. He has been strongly involved in the definition of the business, procurement and financing model for the 10 billion Euros Portuguese High Speed Rail project. Prior to joining RAVE Tiago worked for KPMG Corporate Finance where he was mainly involved in the financial advisory to the Ministry of Public Works and to the Portuguese National Roads Authority, performing several post contracts work for the awarded real and shadow toll road concessions under the Portuguese roads PPP program. He was also involved in the advisory to the UK Department for Work and Pensions, to the Texas Department of Transportation and to several private sector players on more than 25 projects in the health, transport and energy sectors. He was a member of the team which advised London Underground on their Public Private Partnership, the largest PPP project to-date in the UK. He has advised Keolis and FirstGroup on the UK’s Trans-Pennine Express rail franchise and FirstGroup on the ScotRail and Greater Western franchises, as well as advising the Scottish Borders, Midlothian and City of Edinburgh Councils on the Waverly Railway Project to build a new railway line south of Edinburgh in Scotland. He is currently advising the Department of Transport on its procurement of a new fleet of high speed intercity trains.

Dr. Jürgen Sorgenfrei is the chairman of Port of Hamburg Marketing Association since November 2001. Dr. Sorgenfrei, 51, is married and has two children. Since 1998 he has headed the market and project development department - with nine staff - for Hamburger Hafen- und Lagerhaus-AG (HHLA). A economics graduate, he gained his doctorate at the University of Hamburg's Institute of Transport in 1988. Dr. Sorgenfrei gathered his first port-related career experience with Hamburg Port Consulting GmbH, an HHLA consultancy firm. In 1991 he was appointed head of department in the TLM -Transport, Logistics and Management - field and chairman of the joint venture ISETEC Innovative Seaport Technologies. The Port of Hamburg Association champions the interests of the Port of Hamburg while remaining neutral vis-à-vis firms and competitors within the port. The association serves as a central point of contact for the port’s customers from all over the world. It provides news and information on the performance and potential of Germany’s largest seaport, looks after clients and projects, organizes the port’s participation at trade fairs and exhibitions and stages port-specific seminars and international conferences.

SNCF is a railway undertaking operating long distance passenger services, regional passenger services, and freight services. It is also delegated by RFF, the infrastructure manager, to operate and maintain the National Railway Network. SNCF is a public body of 166.000 employees, and a turnover of 16,7 billions € Its freight traffic amounts to 40,9 Billions t-km and its passenger traffic to78,8 billions passenger/km. SNCF is also the mother company of a group of subsidiaries which are operators in the various segments of its activity. The group employs60.000 people and has a consolidated turnover of 5,1 Billions €. The subsidiaries are either totally controlled by SNCF or partially controlled by SNCF to allow them to operate everywhere and to easily conclude partnerships or joint ventures with foreign companies. For instance, in the logistics business, Geodis is itself a group with a turnover of 3.5 Billion €operating all over the world. On the passenger side Keolis is a leader in the private passenger transport activity by bus and rail. In other cases partnerships like Eurostar, Thalys , and many others have been concluded to operate rail passenger services between France, UK, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Benelux and Spain.

It is a cooperation between Europe's leading high-speed rail operators, currently DB (Germany), SNCF (France), Eurostar (UK, France and Belgium), NS Hispeed (Netherlands), ÖBB (Austria), SBB (Switzerland) and SNCB (Belgium), as well as two of their high-speed subsidiaries Thalys and Lyria. Responsibilities include the introduction of the Business Lounges for travellers, contracting pre- and after transport modalities, defining vision and strategy for Travel Information within the Railteam environment and the new programme AirRail in cooperation with airlines.

Henrik Würdemann (37) has been managing director of Veolia Cargo Deutschland GmbH since January 2007. After finishing his studies in civil engineering in Hannover, Henrik Würdemann joined Verkehrsbetriebe Peine-Salzgitter as an operations engineer and later on as head of operations control. In 2001, he joined Veolia Cargo Deutschland GmbH as managing director of various subsidiaries, such as managing director of TWE Bahnbetriebs GmbH until 2005. From 2005 until 2006, he was given commercial power of attorney for Veolia Cargo Deutschland GmbH.
