And this year's congress will be even bigger
Meet our speakers
Chief Executive,
Evercore Pan-Asset Capital Management
Evercore Pan-Asset uses Exchange Traded Funds extensively because they are ideal portfolio building blocks due to the cost-efficient, sharply defined way they track specific indexes. This makes them a very pure way to implement asset allocation decisions. They provide one-stop access to a broadly diversified portfolio of investments in their underlying asset class, but avoid the risk of underperformance due to disappointing stock picking which can occur with active management.
Christopher has been involved in wealth management since joining Cazenove in 1981. He has since been a Director of Barclays de Zoete Wedd, an Executive Director of UBS and a Managing Director of Robertson Stephens, the US technology investment bank. He co-founded Absolute Fund Management in 2001, where he managed a fund of hedge funds and was Chief Executive Officer until 2007.

Director of Manager Selection and Fund Monitoring,
Fonds De Reserve Pour Les Retraites (France)
Philippes main use of ETFs has been to gain exposure to emerging markets, and says the reason why they haven’t had more activity is that most ETF funds capitalization is too small for the size of investments they make, and so prevents them using them in their Strategic Asset Allocation plans.
The main challenges that Philippe has observed in the ETF market is the matching of existing funds with his requirement for exposure to new asset class investments. Issues such as liquidity and higher than expected management fees have hindered his placing ETFs in strategic portfolios, though he does believe that this situation is rapidly improving as the market attracts more investors.
Philippe’s responsibility within the FFR is currently as Head of External Asset Management. Previosuly he headed up in succession; head of research on savings (CDC), ALM manager (CDC), Equity portfolio manager (IXIS) and Investment Director (FRR).
Philippe’s educational background is a post graduate degree in Finance, European MBA ESCP-EAP and member of the French Financial Analysts Association (SFAF).

Alastair opinion of ETFs is that they are ‘useful for strategic implementation at low cost where passive implementation favoured, or pursuing tactical asset or sector allocation calls. His main use is to get fast exposure to equities and fixed income assets for market exposure purposes, though he increasingly sees ETFs as a long term investment tool. Alastair believes that ETFs have the potential to outperform active managers in markets that are particularly difficult for active managers to trade in.
