Meet the speakers of Asia Mining Congress 2009

Mr Peter Akerley ,
President, Chief Executive Officer and Director ,
Erdene Resource Development Corporation
Peter C. Akerley, BSc, has held the position of President and Chief Executive Officer and director since March 2003. Mr. Akerley has over 20 years in the mineral industry including extensive experience in base, precious and industrial minerals in North and South America as well as Asia where he has been involved in Mongolia since the mid-1990’s.
Hon. Jose L. Atienza Jr.,
Secretary,
Department of Environment and Natural Resources
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Lito Atienza has long been a defender of the environment. This has been manifested in his crucial endeavors as a public servant – from the time he served as Assemblyman representing the capital city at the Batasang Pambansa (Philippine Congress), as National Housing Authority General Manager, until the time he was elected into office as Vice-Mayor and Presiding Officer of the City of Manila, and later as its Mayor – the only one in its history to be elected for 3 consecutive terms. An Architecture graduate with Masters in Urban Planning and a Doctorate in Public Administration, he is a champion of effective land use planning who has implemented programs that arguably made Manila the microcosm of sustainable development among urban areas in the Philippines – programs borne of sheer political will for the benefit of present and future generations. He successfully stopped a move to extend the reclamation areas in the city, which would have deprived the people access to what is known to many as one of the best sunsets in the world. He initiated the relocation of oil depots in the thickly populated Pandacan district, and established a Green Buffer Zone in the area to separate the fuel tanks from the community. He implemented the regreening of Manila and successfully planted 100,000 trees within five months last year. He championed the Buhayin ang Maynila (Revive Manila), the most extensive urban renewal program ever achieved in the Philippine capital. As Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, he brings with him his vision, his convictions, his courage, his management skills, his perspective as a local executive and his passion to do more. He also brings with him the balanced perspective of someone who views people as the key partner in the preservation of a healthy environment and in the development of its God-given resources. As chief steward of the environment and its natural resources, he has the marching order from President Arroyo to communicate to crucial stakeholders of the minerals industry about the positive side of mining, and ensure that the benefits of mining accrue to the communities and the Filipinos.
