Semifinalist #2: Erdene Resource Development Corporation
Country where project(s) are located: Mongolia

During a Zuun Mod committee meeting
Project overview:
Erdene Resource Development Corporation is a diversified mineral exploration company focused on high-growth commodities. Its community development work commenced at the same time as its business in Mongolia. In 2008, Erdene launched the Community Liaison (CL) Project to generate a greater sense of ownership by the local community for the Community Development (CD) initiatives that Erdene sponsored. The CL Project became the primary avenue through which Erdene maintained community relations in Mongolia.
The CL Project has two basic components: facilitation of the Zuun Mod committee and
support for local CD initiatives. The Zuun Mod committee represents Erdene, local organisations and independent residents. According to recommendations of the committee and the availability of funding, Erdene provides financial and logistical support for selected CD initiatives. In 2008, Erdene supported seven initiatives recommended by the committee, more than half of the total. Although Erdene has been the principal organiser, relevant district, education, health and environmental department officials participated actively in the committee meetings and initiatives.
Specifically, Erdene’s contributions have positively impacted the community’s educational and health infrastructure, livelihoods and has resulted in new community infrastructure such as a public park.

Semifinalist #3: FCF Minerals
Country where project(s) are located: Philippines
At one of the job fairs organised by FCF Minerals
Project overview:
FCF Minerals had organised a community development initiative that focused on the out of school youth (OSY) of Runruno, a village in the northern part of the Philippines. The OSY Skills Development and Placement programme was also conceived in light of the current economic climate that saw many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) lose their livelihoods abroad and prevented them from being able to provide financial support for their loved ones. FCF Minerals’ community development initiative focused on skills development and job placement for OSY was sensitive to the plight of these young Filipinos as they were enabled to financially support their families during these difficult times.
To date, 640 OSYs have received training and employment through FCF Minerals’ programme. Some of these OSYs were from the Nueva Vizcaya province while others were from other nearby provinces. In terms of ethnic origins, this group of youths include Igorots, Ifugaos, Ibaloi, Kalanguya, Asinai and other indigenous groups.
Semifinalist #4: Intex Resources
Country where project(s) are located: Philippines
Project overview:
Intex Resources ASA is a dynamic emerging Norwegian mining company focused on non-precious metal and mineral projects. Among its various worldwide activities, its banner project is the Mindoro Nickel Project located in the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. Project work is currently in the exploration stage and initial findings indicate its potential to be one of the world’s major nickel discoveries and its potential to provide an unexpected opportunity for development.
Based on the needs of Mindoreños for potable water, Intex Philippines worked with several local communities in setting up infrastructure for water facilities. In many of the provinces’ remote towns and villages, infrastructure for water facilities is either unavailable or inadequate. The situation is direr for the Mangyans, a tribe of indigenous people found in Mindoro and who mostly reside in the island’s mountain ranges. For their water needs, Mindoreños have had to rely on surface water, which – with its impurities and bacterial content – has been the primary cause of intestinal diseases and bacterial infection. For those with access to nearby spring water, this has meant tedious daily treks for their daily water needs. Working in concert with local communities, Intex Philippines was able to successfully set up water facilities that have alleviated health problems for the majority of its stakeholders.

The health and wellbeing of the local community in Papua, especially in Mimika Regency where PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) operates, is a primary concern for PTFI and is thus a major component of PTFI’s community development strategy.
