Congratulations to FCF Minerals for winning the Community Development Initiative Award in the Asia Mining Congress Sustainability Awards 2009
It was a tough call, but FCF Minerals won by organising a community development initiative that truly embodies what community development should be. Their initiative has played a major role in connecting with and developing local communities.
Here are their project details:
Country where project(s) are located: Philippines
At one of the job fairs organised by FCF Minerals
Project overview:
FCF Minerals had organised a community development initiative that focused on the out of school youth (OSY) of Runruno, a village in the northern part of the Philippines. The OSY Skills Development and Placement programme was also conceived in light of the current economic climate that saw many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) lose their livelihoods abroad and prevented them from being able to provide financial support for their loved ones. FCF Minerals’ community development initiative focused on skills development and job placement for OSY was sensitive to the plight of these young Filipinos as they were enabled to financially support their families during these difficult times.
To date, 640 OSYs have received training and employment through FCF Minerals’ programme. Some of these OSYs were from the Nueva Vizcaya province while others were from other nearby provinces. In terms of ethnic origins, this group of youths include Igorots, Ifugaos, Ibaloi, Kalanguya, Asinai and other indigenous groups.
We would also like to thank all our nominees who are all outstanding in their support of the development of the communities they are operating in.
The nominees are:
Judged by an international panel of industry figures, the Sustainability Awards serves to showcase and reward the companies who have, over the last year, implemented the best initiatives and practices in community development.
