Laurie graduated from Melbourne University in 1976, with B.Agr.sc and spent many years contract harvesting and share farming before acquiring irrigation properties in the Moulamein and Barham districts near the Murray River. All of the properties have been redeveloped to enable efficient rice, cereal and fodder production. Technologies like GIS, precision farming and remote sensing are used on the farms. Over the last fifteen years Laurie has represented irrigation farmers at many different levels. He is a past president of the Ricegrowers Association of Australia and currently chairs the NFF Water Taskforce. He has recently been appointed a Commissioner of the National Water Commission.
