Justin Smirk joined Westpac's Economic Research team in 1999. He is the Bank's spokesperson on commodities, the US economy plus regional and agribusiness issues. He is also the bank’s key researcher on monetary policy. Prior to joining Westpac Justin was an economist in the Economic Analysis section of the Reserve Bank of Australia. But he has not always been an economist. Upon leaving high school Justin worked on various farming enterprise before graduating from Muresk Institute of Agriculture. From the mid 1980s and early 1990s he worked as agricultural consultant based in the wheatbelt town of Merredin in Western Australia and he continues to closely follow the current issues in agribusiness and regional economic development. Justin’s major ongoing research project is to bring the bank’s research on the structural changes associated with the urbanisation of developing world into the longer-term forecasts for farm commodity prices. Justin is also leading figure in the Westpac’s forecasting process, editor of Westpac’s quarterly Regional Economic Report and Commodities Outlook Report and a major contributor to Westpac's monthly Market Outlook Report.
